HAT
Filed Jan. 8, 1955 INVENTOR gala/1%. "rm-g ATTORNEYS WWWQMW Patented Aug. 6, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hats and particularly to that type of stylish high hat commonly known as an opera hat.
My object is to produce a novel and useful construction that can be economically manufactured, that will be light in weight, will hold its shape, will readily conform to the head of the owner, and that will not so break in the event it is accidentally creased or crushed in at the sides but that it may be restored to its original condition by the owner without having to resort to the usual more expensive blocking process as performed only by an expert hat operator.
In the accompanying drawing- Fig. 1 is a front elevation, shown partly in section, of my improved hat;
Fig. 2 is a plan view partly broken away.
In the drawing, I represents the hat brim, 2 the crown side, 3 the top or tip, so called, 4 the conventional ribbon around the crown side directly above the brim, and 5 the usual silk binding at the outer edge of the brim. 6 represents the usual sweat band. The brim, crown side, and tip are made of felt, and preferably fur felt. The exposed surface of the felt is preferably carded or otherwise so treated as to produce a nap which when lured produces a lustre effect. All of the brim I, save preferably at the inner edge I, is strongly sized to render it sufliciently stiff to retain its original blocked shape. This strongly sized portion of the brim is indicated by the stippling (Fig. 2). The tip 3 of the hat is likewise strongly sized so that it will retain its blocked shape and not sag in the center. The upper margin of the crown side 2 is correspondingly strongly sized as indicated by the stippled portion 2' so that where the crown meets the edge of the tip at an angle said angle will be properly reinforced to retain its blocked shape. The material of the crown side below the stiffened upper margins is less strongly sized so that while it will remain smooth and unwrinkled and will properly support the tip, it will, nevertheless, 5 be sufiiciently flexible so that should the crown side be accidentally knocked in or creased it will not break but may be easily restored to its original condition by the owner by the simple process of luring as distinguished from the more 10 expensive blocking process which requires the services of an experienced workman. In the usual construction of an opera hat, if the crown side is so injured it almost invariably results in a break and its appearance cannot be restored excepting 15 by a reblocking process. By my invention it is possible to produce from felt at comparatively small cost a high-grade, tall hat of the stylish opera type that will be attractive in appearance, light, durable, easy fitting, that will withstand 20 considerable rough usage without serious injury, and all at a cost to the consumer much less than the cost of the conventional opera hat.
I claim:
1. A hat comprising a stifi felt brim, a substantially fiat stiff felt tip, a felt crown side between said brim and tip and supporting said tip and stiffened throughout its major portion to a lesser degree than said brim or tip so as to be relatively flexible. 30
2. A hat comprising a stiff felt brim, a stiff substantially fiat felt tip, a felt crown side connecting said brim and tip and meeting the latter at an abrupt angle and stiffened around the upper portion to reinforce said angle, the major portion of said crown side being relatively flexible.
JULIUS N. WOLF.
