IMPROVEMENT IN HAT-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,695, dated February 26, 1878; application filed January 31, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J nsus M. OAsTrLLo, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Opera -Hat Holder, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved device, illustrating its use when suspending a hat from an upholstered chair. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, illustrating its use when suspending a hat from a wooden chair. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same folded. Fig. 4. is a front view of the same folded.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for suspending a hat from the back of an opera-chair, which shall be simple and neat in construction, and convenient and reliable in use, being so made that it may be folded and carried in the pocket.
The invention consists in the combination of the plate, the hinged clasp provided with a sliding hand, the hinged pin, and the hinged plate provided with the point, with eachother, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a small plate, to one end of which is hinged a clamp, B, the jaws of which are designed to clasp the brimof ahat, and are held together by a band, I), sliding upon their shanks. To one side of the plate A is hinged a pin, G, and to its other side is hinged a short plate, D. The pin O is designed to be passed through the upholstering of the back of an opera-chair, as shown in Fig. 1.
The plate D, near its free end, has a pin,d, attached to it, which is designed to be pressed into the back of a wooden opera chair, as shown in Fig. 2.
With this device a person can suspend his hat from the back of the seat in front of him, so that he will be relieved from the annoyance of holding it, and from the chance of having it kicked out of his reach or injured should he place it upon the floor.
When the device is not in use, the plate D is turned down against the plate A, the point a entering a hole in the said plate A. The clasp B is turned up upon the other side of the plate A, the pin 0 is turned down upon the clasp B, and the band 11 is slipped up over the point of the said pin 0. With this construction the holder can be readily carried in the pocket.
Having thus fully described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an article of manufacture, the device consisting of the plate A, the hinged clasp B, provided with a sliding band, b, the hinged pin 0, and the hinged plate D, provided with the point d, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
J AMES 1. GRAHAM, O. SEDGWICK.
