PORTABLE HOLDER FOB. LADIES HATS.
APPLIOATION FILED OUT. 21.1904.
UNTTED STATES Patented April 11, 1905.
MAURICE S. HELLMAN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
PORTABLE HOLDER FOR LADIES HATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,098, dated April 11, 1905.
Application flied October 21,1904. Serial No. 229,384.
To 1/. whom, [/5 may concern:
e it known that I, MAUiiIon S. Humans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Portable llolder for Ladies Hats, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates particularly to a holder for use in theaters and other public buildings where large numbers of seats or chairs are arranged in rows.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a portable device that can be carried on the person and can be applied by the person using it to take over, and thereby be detachably fastened to a seat-back or other suitable support in any theater or ball, and when so applied will serve to receive and engage the hat-pin to support a hat attached to said pin.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder of this nature which can be folded up into small compass to facilitate the carrying thereof in a pocket or bag.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure l is a perspective of one form of the holder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing another form adapted to be folded. Fig.
is a similar view of the same in folded position.
1 designates the body of the holder which may be formed, having a longitudinal perforation or opening 2, preferably flaring at the top, as indicated at 3, and having a lateral shank or bracket 4: for attachment to the sup porting means. said supporting means consisting of a 's 'iring clip or clamp 5, secured at one end to the bracket 4: and preferably provided with a U-shapcd spring-metal strip adapted to engage and snap on the edge of the seat, rail, or other fixed object to support the holder 1 in the desired position.
The spring-clip 5 may be secured to the bracket 4 by a rivetti, which may be set tight, so as to hold the parts in relative fixed posi tion, or may be sufficiently loose to enable them to turn on one another.
in case the folding of the spring-clip on the holder does not give sufficient reduction in size the spring-clip itself may be made to fold, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the same being formed of two parts T and S, secured together by a rivet or pivot 9, whereon the part 8 can turn, so as to enable it to be turned up against the part 7, as shown in Fig. 3, both of the parts 7 and 8 turnii'ig as a whole on the rivet or pivot (3, so as to fold up against the bracket at.
The device is sufficiently small and compact to be carried in the pocket or in a hand-bag, and when it is desired to use the same the spring-clip 5 is forced over the top of the back of a chair in advance of theone on which the user is sitting or onto and over the top of any rail, strip, or llange that may be found available and in convenient position for example, the back of a pew or of a book-holder fastened to the back of a pew or any other suitable support. \Vhen so placed, the clip will support the holder iin position, with the perforation 3 extending substantially vertical, so that the user can simply place the hatpin through the hat and into and through said perforation, which receives and engages the hat-pin to hoid the same, and thereby hold the hat attached thereto.
It is apparent that various modifications may be made in the device without departing from my invention.
\Yhat I claim is* 1. A portable hat-holder comprising a body having a perforation adapted to receive and engage a hat-pin to support a hat attached to said pin, and a spring-clip attached to said body and adapted to take over a seat-back or like support.
A portable hat-holder comprising a body having a perforation adapted to receive and engage a hat-pin to support a hat attached to said pin, and a spring-clip attached to said body and folding thereon.
A portable hat-holder comprising a perforated body and a swing-clip pivotally attached thereto and composed of pivotally-connected members to enable the spring-clip to be folded on itselfand on the perforated body.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, atLos Angeles, California, this 12th day of October, 190i.
MAURICE S. HELLMAN. 1n presence of- Gnonon T. Haennuv, JULIA TowNsuNn.
