POCKET HEAD-REST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,649, dated December 18, 1888.

To all whom, it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR HARRISON, of XVashing'ton, Yin the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pocket Head-Rests; andl do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive head-rest which may be readily and quickly folded, so it can be carried in the coat-pocket, or can be opened and slipped over the back of a car seat or chair.

My invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device complete ready for attachment to a car-seat back. Fig. 2 is a front view of the device with the rest or cushion omitted. Fig. 3 is a side view of the device, omitting the rest or cushion and showing in dotted lines the position of the legs of the device when sprung' over the back of a car-seat, which is also shown in dotted lines. Fig. i is a detail view of the rest or cushion and the brace-rod secured in a hem thereof; and Fig. 5 is a view showing the parts folded and placed in a case, the whole beingl ready for convenient transportation, the case being of the shape such as commonly used for spectacles.

The frame of my device is composed of three parts, made, preferably, of spring-wire, as phosphor-bronze or steel; but it will be understood that the material maybe in other form than wire-.for instance, it may be of spring metal in ribbon form. For the sake of brevity, however, I shall refer to the material as wire.

Two pieces of wire, A and A', are bent substantially alike into a form such as shown in Fig. 3. The front legs, a a', terminate in Serial No. 267,839. (No model.)

The wire is then earried upward and bent into suitable form 1o support the fabric or leather rest or cushion, and is thence carried downward to a point a little below the shoulders b b', where it is bent into shoulders (l d. Thus arms c c are formed, over which the fabric or leather rest is to be slipped. The wire is then bent downward, as atc c', and carried inward toward the legs u u. These rear clamping-legs, e c', have loops or eyes ff', by which the two portions A A are hinged together, while at the same time allowing,- them to be laid Hat against each other, and thus folded into a compact form, as shown in Fig. 5.

The brace-rod (i, forming;I the third part of the frame, is composed of a single piece of wire, and is provided with loops g g, which are adapted to slide over the arms cc to the point under shoulders b D and above shoulders d cl, the elastieityof the side frame-wires allowing),- this, and then the shoulders confine the rod in place. To this brace-rod is secured, by st itehing,l or other suitable fastening' means, a strip of flexible material, as leather or 'fabricsuch as webbing-as shown at H, to form the rest or cushion for the head. This rest is also provided with pockets h h to receive the arms c c.

The rest may be folded around the bracerod, and with the folded side portions, A A', of the frame be slipped into a suitable envelope or case, as shown in Fig'. 5. The whole is therefore easily portable in a pocket or valise either with or without a case.

To arrange the device for use, the side portions, A A', are opened to allow the loops y g to slip over the arms c c. Then by sliding the brace-rod down the pockets h 7L are drawn over said arms c f", and when the rod, with its loops, has reached the point shown in the drawings the elasticity of the wires of the side portions will cause the shoulders to confine said rod in position with the rest or cushion stretched taut.

The rod, with its loops, has two further functions-viz., it keeps the side portions of the frame spread apart, and also contines the elasticity of the clamping-legs to those portions of the Wire Which are below the loops. i

The shoulders or horizontal portions d d are made sufficiently long to allow for the thickness of the back of the car seat or chair to Which the device is adapted; but it will be understood that for ordinary chair-backs the contemplate the manufacture and sale of the.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A head-rest frame consisting of two parts hinged .together at one end and a brace or connecting rod having a loop at each end for holding said two parts in fixed relation to each other, substantially as described.

2. A folding head-rest consisting of two frame portions connected directly together at one end, whereby a V-shaped frame may be formed, a brace or connecting rod for holding said portions spread apart, and a rest or cushion for connecting the upper ends of said lframe portions above the brace-rod,- substantially as described.

3. A folding head-rest consisting of the Wire frames A A', hinged vtogether and provided with shoulders, as shown, a brace or connecting rod provided With end loops adapted to slide over the ends of frames A A', and a rest or cushion connected to said brace-rod and having pockets to fit over said frame ends, substantially as described.

4. In combination with a flexible rest or cushion provided With a pocket at each end, a rod secured to one edge of said cushion and extending from one pocket to the other, and provided with end loops, substantially asf'described.y
