ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 30, 1952 HEADREST Philip Challis, London, England Application November 4, 1949, serial No. 125,499 In Great Britain November 5, 1948 6 Claims. 1
for attachment to the back of a chair comprises a pair of frames of metal or the like pivoted together at their upper ends and adapted to be sprung apart at their lower ends to grip over the back of the chair and at the same time firmly to hold a removable cushion or the like at their upper ends so that said cushion or the like is supported above the back of the chair to serve as a head rest.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating forms of head rest constructed in accordance with the present invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of head rest;
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same with the cushion and chair back illustrated by dot and dash lines;
Figures 3 and 4 are similar views of a modification;
Figure 5 is a side view of the device incorporating locking means for the lower ends; and
Figure 6 is a side elevation of a locking device.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2 a head rest attachment adapted to removably hold a cushion or the like above the back of a chair comprises a, pair of substantially rectangular frames A, 13 made of metal rod or wire and pivotally connected together at their upper ends at C and D.
The frame A adapted to engage at its lower end over the back of a chair E indicated in dot and dash lines comprises a lower part F of U- form provided at each of its upper ends with a pair of pivots G, H to which are pivotally attached pairs of upper side pieces J, K disposed more or less parallel to each other. The upper ends of the side pieces, J, K are pivotally attached at C, D to the upper part of the other frame B.
The frame B consists of a horizontal lower portion L bent upwardly at each end to form side members M which are cranked rearwardly at N at both sides to rest on the top of the chair back. The upper end of the side members M are extended rearwardly at 0 where it is connected to the pivots C, D. The rear ends of the portions 0 are bent downwardly at P and connected together by a cross bar Q. A further cross bar R connects the portions 0 at points situated between the two pivots C and D.
The rear side pieces K of the frame A are cranked downwardly at S and connected by a cross bar T. The lower cross bar of the U-frame F is bowed outwardly at the middle as shown at F Cross bars Q and T, both of which are offset from the pivots D at the rear of the frames, constitute jaws for gripping a cushion, and also constitute stops for limiting swing of the frames in direction of swinging the lower ends apart.
In use the bowed portion F of the frame A is moved rearwards with respect to the lower part of the frame B so that the chair back E is gripped between the lower parts of the two frames as shown in Figure 2. This movement of the frames presses the two cross bars Q and T together so as to grip between them the upper edge of a detachable cushion or the like V which is thereby held in position over the front of the frames to serve as a head rest to the occupant of the chair as shown in Figure 2.
In the modification shown in Figures 3 and 4 the frame A is made without the double side pieces and consists of a rectangular frame of metal rod or wire having the lower side F bowed as before while the side members J J are cranked at S and connected by a cross bar T The frame A is pivoted at C to the upper part of the other frame B which consists of a metal strip or bar comprising a lower horizontal portion L bent upwards to form side members M cranked rearwardly at N and twisted through at W. The upper ends of the side members M are curved over as shown at X where they are connected together by a pair of cross bars Q and R disposed at opposite sides of the pivot C The device shown in Figures 3 and 4 is used in the same way as that shown in Figures 1 and 2 so as to support the cushion or the like V above the chair back E as indicated by dot and dash lines in Figure 4.
Figures 5 and 6 show a locking device for preventing the lower ends F and L from opening out by leverage on the chair back. This device comprises a turn buckle A which is rotatably secured to the frame B at B by means of a pin B This turn buckle A supports a spiral wedge A so that with the device mounted upon a chair back the turn buckle may be turned until the wedge bears against the frame member A In this position the frame members A and 13 cannot at their lower ends move further apart to allow the device to be levered off the chair back. In the position shown in full line in Figure 5 the members A and B are spread at their maximum, opening and are prevented from moving further open by the narrow end of the wedge A In the position shown in dotted line the frame members have their lower ends closed to a minimum in which case the thick end of the Wedge bears against the frame member A In Figure 6 the turn buckle is shown off the device to show the form of spiral wedge.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention I declare that what I claim is:
1. A head rest for attachment to the back of a chair, comprising a pair of frames, pivots connecting the frames next their upper ends whereby the frames can be swung apart at their lower ends to grip over the back of a chair, said frames having means next the pivoted ends limiting extent of swing on said pivots in direction of swinging the lower ends apart, said means providing cooperating jaws spaced from the pivots and at the rear of the frames adapted to hold a removable cushion and thereby support said cushion above the back of the chair to form a head rest.
2. A head rest in accordance with claim 1, wherein said means comprises longitudinally engageable cross-members, one on each frame, adapted to pinch said cushion therebetween from side to side of the frames.
3. A head rest in accordance with claim 1,
wherein said means is located substantially intermediate of the line of said pivots and chairgripping lower ends of the frames.
4. A head rest in accordance with claim 1, wherein each side arm of one frame comprises a substantially parallel pair of members with two pivots at each end.
5. A head rest in accordance with claim 1, wherein one frame is formedlwith single side pieces and the other is formed from a bar having a substantially semi-circular hook at its upper end with the pivots mounted in the uppermost part thereof,
.6. A head rest in accordance with claim 1, wherein is provided a locking means between portions of the frames for retaining the frames in chair-engaging position.
