UNITED STATESl STEAM GENERATOR George W. Bach, rie, Pa., assignor to Union Iron Works, Erie, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application May 2, 1932, Serial No. 608,717
3 Claims. c (Cl. 122-478) Steam generators are preferably supplied with superheaters. The present invention is designed to improve and simplify the arrangement of superheaters in connection with steam Featuresk and details of .the invention will appear from the specification and claims.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing as folloWs:-
Fig. 1 shows a central vertical section throug a boiler on the line 1-1 in Fig. 2. Y
Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, a part of the drum being broken away to better show the construction.
1 marks the furnace in which the boiler is mounted, 2 a front drum, 31a rear drum, 4 a bottom drum, 5 and 6 steaming banks'of tubes between the lower and front drum, 7 down-take tubes between the rear drum'and lower drum, 8 upper water tubes connecting the drums, and 9 upper steam tubes connectingthe drums. A bae v10 is provided carrying the gases from the furnace to a pass upwardly andv downwardly between the upper drums.
The steam tubes 9 discharge into'a channel 11 arranged withinthe rear drum. This channel has open ends 12 communicating with the y rear drum. Superheater tubes 13 lead from the channel 11 across the upper part of the furnace toward the front drum and has a return loop 14 leading to the rear drum. A chamber 15 re.
ceives the steam from the return loop i4 and a steam discharge pipe 16 leads from the chamber. The chamber 15 has closed ends 17 so that there is no mixture betweenthe superheated steam and the saturated steam. Y
In order that theV generator may be self-draining the chamber 15 has a slight drainage opening 18 permitting the drainage of water from the chamber l5 to the rear drum. This opening, however, is not suicient to involve any material movement of steam from the rear drum to the chambers In this it will be seen that a very simple and convenient structure is provided. 'I'he channel and chamber Walls may be formed of Very light metal as the pressures are practically balanced within the rear drum.
What I claim as new is:-
1. In a steam generator, the combination of a front drum; a rear drum; a downwardlyV extending circulating system connecting said drums and comprising steaming and downltake tubes, the major portion of the steaming tubes leading to the front drum; upper water tubes l' 5 connecting the front and rear drums; upper Asteam tubes connecting the front and realr drums; a connecting channel at the rear drum into which the steam tubes discharge; superheater tubes leading from the channel and ex- 10 tending toward the front drum and returning to the rear drum; a chamber in the rear drum to which the superheater tubes discharge; and
a steam discharge from the chamber.
2. In a steam generator, the combination of l5 a front drum; a rear drum; a downwardly extending circulating system connecting said drums and comprising steamingv and down-take tubes, the major portion of the steaming tubes leading to the front drum; upper water tubes 20 connecting the front and rear drums; upper steam rtubes connecting the front and rear drumsya connecting channel at the rear drum into which the steam tubes discharge, said channel opening to the rear drum; superheater tubes 25 leading from the channel and extending toward lthe front drum and returning to the rear drum;
a chamber in the rear drum to which the superheater tubes discharge; and asteam discharge from the chamber. 30v
Vinto which the steam tubes discharge; superheater tubes leading from the channel and extending toward theY front drum and returning to the rear drum; achamber in the rear drum to which the superheater tubes discharge; and a l45 steam discharge from the chamber, said channel extending through the chamber VVand connecting with the rear drum.
