Description
, J. W. HOWARD. Painters Brushes.
No. 199,205. Patentd Jan. 15, 1878..
N/PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH W. HOWARD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAINTERS BRUSHES.
H Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,205, dated January 15, 1878 application filed June 16, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH W. HOWARD, of' Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in a Combination Painters Duster-Brush, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and draw- II] gs. V
Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a view of the putty-knife; andFig. 3, a cross-section on a line w 00, Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to unite the painters duster and putty-knife in one article- Of manufacture, and to provide for attaching them to the garment or belt of the operator, so that he may have either within his reach at any time of need.
For this purpose I make the ordinary duster A with a short handle, B, tapering from the shank O, suited to the shape of the blade D Of a putty-knife. This handle B is made with a kerf, E,'in it lengthwise in the middle, from the end toward the shank G, into which the knife may be slipped. This handle is also provided with a case, F, fitted to its shape, and with an opening, f, on one side, so that the knife may be put in position after the case is attached to the handle, the open side allowing the wide end of the handle to be inserted. This case is attached to the handle by one or more screws or pins, G, put through a slot in the case and into the handle. This pin and slot allow the case to move laterally on the handle, so that when the knife is in place in the handle the solid part of the case will cover the edges of the knife and prevent it being drawn out. In this form the handle H of the knife completes the handle for the brush, making a part of it but, when desirable, the case is turned so that the opening f is over one edge of the knife, when it may be readily removed.
I provide for carrying the brush when not in use, either as a whole or as the brush part, when the knife is detached by means of the spring-hook I. The spring'end of the hook is united with a ring, K, secured to the shank, and by this hook the brush is readily secured to the belt or waistband. This hook becomes an important attachment to this brush, for,
especially when the knife is removed, the short tapering handle B will not stay in a belt without being held by some such device, and it is very convenient and desirable to have it attached to any duster. Therefore,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure .by Letters Patent, is-
l. The brush A, having the section of the handle B, with the kerf E for inserting from the end the putty-knife D, the handle H of which completes the handle of the brush, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the handle B, having the kerf E, the case F, with its opening f, and made to slide laterally, substantially as and for purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the brush A and ring K, the detachable spring-hook I, substantially as and for purpose set forth.
JOSIAH W. HOWARD.
