Description

D. C. OSHEA Jan. 8, 1935.
GARMENT Filed Sept. 5, 1935 Patented Jan. 8, 1935 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in garments and, more especially, a garment of the type shown in my prior United States Patent No. 1,200,989, granted October 10, 1916.
As shown in that patent, my improved garment is provided with a front flap having buttons and a rear flap passing beneath the crotch and provided with buttonholes to engage the buttons on the front flap.
One of the features of the present invention is the provision of an elastic insert in the rear flap lying under and in front of the crotch to form a pouch or increase the fullness.
Another feature is the provision of means for pouching or increasing the fullness of the low- 0 er end of the front flap.
These features serve to increase the effectiveness of the garment as a supporter, enhance the comfort of the same and help to prevent displacement of the garment or parts supported thereby.
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In those forms of devices embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation; Fig. 2 is a view taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1 showing the rear flap unbuttoned; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 3 showing a modification. As shown in the drawing, 10 indicates the body of theshirt, jersey, or the like, and 11 indicates the waist portion or girdle which is cut short at the sides, as indicated by 11*.
The front section of the girdle portion is extended downwardly to form a front flap or tongue 12 preferably of such length as to reach or perhaps extend a little beyond the crotch. The rear portion of the girdle is extended to form a rear flap or tongue 13 which, at its upper end, is of the shape of the flap 12 but which extends considerably below the same and has its lower portion widened as at 14. The front flap carries the buttons 16 and the rear flap, the buttonholes 17. There may be more than one row of buttons and they may be set at varying heights, as shown in my prior patent referred to above.
The rear flap 13 is provided with an elastic insert 20, here shown as oval in shape. This insert may be located to lie under and/or in front of the, crotch. It may be made of any suitable elastic material, for example, rib stitched material, elastic webbing, or the like, but should be considerably more elastic than the rest of thematerial. H
In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the front flap has. cut in its lower edge an inverted V-shaped notch 30 which is filled by a triangular 10 piece of elastic material 31 which may be made of the same material as the insert 20. The triangular piece 31 is here shown as somewhat narrower than the piece removed so that when the edges of the notch are sewed to the edges of the piece 31, the lower end of the front flap 12 is somewhat pouched or given a certain fullness.
In Fig. 4 I have shown the front flap 112 merely notched and the edges of the notch sewn together, as indicated by 130, to give the lower end of the flap some pouching or fullness; but the insert is omitted.
It is obvious, of course, that either the insert in the rear flap, or the means for pouching the lower end of the front flap may be used alone or in combination with the other.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood --that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
WhatI regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patents, is:
A garment of the character described, including; a shirt having a front flap with fastening means and a rear flap adapted to pass beneath the crotch and provided with fastening means adapted to engage the fastening means on the front flap; and nieans for pounching the lower end of the front flap including an inverted V-shaped notch in its lower edge, said notch being filled by a triangular piece of elastic material, said triangular piece being normally narrower than the normal width of the notch.
