SMOKE CONSUMER Filed Jan. 20, 1952 /M/ '75 Y I /ff/ r //l l 75 72 Patented Oct. 9, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application January 20,
3 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in smoke consumers and has for its primary object the provision of an improved construction of this character having special provision and arrangel ment therein for regulating the action thereof so as to promote or induce complete combustion.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which- Fig. 1 is a partial longitudinal section of a boiler furnace equipped with smoke consuming means embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 a section taken substantially on line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a section on a reduced scale taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. l a detailed section taken substantially on line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 a detailed section taken substantially on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises an ordinary boiler furnace installation as shown comprising the usual fire grate 70, combustion chamber '71 and tubular boiler '72. A consumer chamber 73 is arranged as indicated directly in front of the boiler 72. The consuming chamber '73 is equipped with a plurality of longitudinal parallel partitions forming passageways '74 and two regulating frames 'l5 and 76 are arranged as shown in front of the consuming chamber '73. The frames 75 and 76 are provided, respectively, with spaces regulating bars providing between them regulating spaces 77 and '78 adapted and arranged to open or close the passageways '74 upon lateral shifting thereof. The regulating frame 75 is manipulated by means of two operating rods 'I9 carrying cam yokes 81 and the frame 76 is operated by means of rods 80 carrying cani yokes 82. The yokes 81 are equipped with cam projections 83 and the yokes 82 with cam projections 84. An operating shaft 85 passes, as shown, through the cam yokes 81 and 82, said shaft being provided with corresponding cam blocks 86 operating to shift the frames 75 and 76 oppositely in front of the passageways between the plates '74, as will be readily understood. The shaft 85 is connected by beveled gears 88 with a shaft 89 as shown. The shaft 89 is operated by means of a clutch 90 shifted by an operating handle 91 to engage a clutch 92 on a drive shaft 93 driven by an electric motor 94. The clutch member 90 also carries a bevel gear 95 meshing with a bevel gear 96 on a crank shaft 97. Obviously, by this ar- 1932, Serial No. 587,746
rangement, the clutch member 90 may be readily shifted to operate the shaft 85 by power or by hand, as desired. Operation of the shaft 85 will cause alternate reciprocations of the frames 75 and 76 in opposite direction thereby varying the 60 passage of the products of combustion through the spaces between the plates '74 and inducing complete combustion. Y
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my in- Vention into eect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a boer furnace comprising a grate and boiler and having a passageway leading from the grate to the boiler; a plurality of partitions in said passageway dividing the same into a plurality of relatively narrow passageways; a plurality of regulating frames arranged in front of said passageways and shiftso able laterally relatively thereto; regulating bars on said frames to open and close said passageways; an operating shaft operatively connected with said regulating frames to shift the same in different directions; and selective means for op- 35 erating said shaft either by hand or by power.
2. The combination with a boiler furnace comprising a grate and boiler and having a passage- Way leading from the grate to the boiler; a plurality of partitions in said passageway dividing the same into a plurality of relatively narrow straight passageways; a plurality of regulating frames arranged in front of said passageways and shiftable laterally relatively thereto; regulating bars on said frames to regulate said passageways; and a means for indepedently shifting said regulating frames.
3. The combination with a boiler furnace comprising a grate and boiler and having a passageway leading from the grate to the boiler; a plu- 100 rality of partitions in said passageway dividing the same into a plurality of relatively narrow straight passageways; a plurality of regulating frames arranged in front of said passageways and shiftable laterally relatively thereto; regulating bars on said frames to regulate said passageways; and means for continuously and alternatingly shifting said regulating frames.
