The Babcock & Wilcox Company,
. :t of to Bayonne,
This invention relates to a water tube boiler that is provided with a steam and water drum to which tubes carrying a mixture of steam and water are connected. By this invention the dis- 5 charge ends of water tubes of the boiler proper and also of the furnace wall tubes may be connected to the steam and water drum in such a manner that the steam and water are separated from each other after the mixture enters the steam and water drum, the steam entering the steam and water space and the water entering the water space of the drum.
The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a. vertical section through a boiler and furnace illustrative of the invention; Fig. 2 is a section through the drum on an enlarged scale showing the connection of the tubes to the drum; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one tag of the extensions of the tubes taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2
showing a modification; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 taken along the line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6
is a section along the line 6-6 of Fig. 4; Fig. 'l is a section similar to Fig. 6 showing a modification;
Figs. 8 and time views similar to Fig. 4 showing other modifications; and. Fig. 10 is a section along the line 10-19 of Fig. 9.
'In the drawings, reference character 1 indicates 5) the furnace of a boiler above which a water tube boiler of the Babcock a Wilcox'type is located.
The boiler comprises the usual steam and water drum 2 in which the normal water level is indicated by the line 3. The drum 2 is connected by nipples 5 to the downtake headers 4 which are in turn connected by a bank of inclined tubes 6 to "the uptake headers which are connected by the circulating tubes 8 to the steam and water 2.
The boiler is provided with the usual bames for directing the hot products of combustion from the furnace 1 to the outlet or stack 9.
The furnace is provided with vertically extending water wall tubes 10 connected at their upper ends to headers 11 and at their lower ends to 5 headers 12. The headers 12 are connected by s": provided with extensions 15 that extend from the ends of the tubes 14 into the drum a sumcient distance so that the lower ends thereof are below the normal water level in the drum. The extensions 15 are curved intermediate their ends with their lower ends preferably parallel to each other. These tubes are provided with rectangularly shaped openings 16 on the concave side of the bent portions of the tubes.
The mixture of steam and water entering the drum 2 through the tubes 8 from the boiler 95 proper and through the tubes 14 from the furnace wall tubes passes into the extensions 15 and centrifugal force causes the water to be separated from the steam as the mixture passes through the curved portion of the extensions 15. The water 70 passes out through the lowerends of the extensions 15 into the water space of the drum 2, while the steam passes through the openings 16 into the steam space of the drum 2.
By providing the extensions 15 the mixture of 7 steam and water entering the drum is separated so that comparatively dry steam will be in the "steam space of the steam and water drum.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the extensions 15' are shown as terminating above 30 the normal water level of the drum. In this modification each extension 15 is provided on its concave side with a slot 16' that extends from the lower end of the extension to within a short distance of the inside surface of the drum.
The modification shown in Fig. '7 is the same as that shown in Fig. 6 except that the edges of the tube 15' at the slot are bent back, as indicated at 1'7, to prevent water that has been separated from the steam from being thrown out of the extensions into the steam space of the steam and water drum.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the ends of the tubes 14 extend a short distance beyond the inner wall of the drum 2 and are increased in diameter, as indicated at 18. The extensions 19 of these tubes, which are similar to the extenclone 15', are enlarged and the enlarged ends are welded to the ends of the tubes 14, as indicated at 20. 'I'heslots'21in the extensions 19 are simoeasvs curved extensions from said tubes into said drum, said extensions being provided with openings on the inner sides of the curves.
3. In a boiler, a steam and water drum, tubes connected to the steam space of said drum, and extensions from saidtubes into said drum, said extensions having their ends below the normal water level in said drum and being provided with openings above the normal water level in said drum.
