IMPROVEMENT IN MANIFOLD COPYING-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,144, dated October 16,1877; application filed September 1, 1877.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. ELLIs and WVILLIAM MCDONALD, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, h(ve invented a new and Improved Letter and Copying Book, of which the following is a specifica tion:

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention relates to that class of letter and copying books that contain oiled paper, and in which the letters and characters are formed simultaneously on two leaves of the book by means of a stylus-point and a sheet of carbon or impression paper placed between the two leaves.
In books of this class, as commonly made, the oil employed in making the leaves transparent soaks into the index and into the back of the book, and spoils them, rendering it inipossibleto write upon the leaves of the index.
To obviate these difficulties, and to flllIllSll a compact port-able apparatus for manifold writing, is the object of our invention.
In the drawing, A is the body of the book, which consists of thin leaves, alternate ones being oiled to render them partly transparent The body of the book, before being placed in the cover I is provided with a half-cover, O, of enameled cloth or other material which is impervious to oil. This half-cover is attached to the back cover, and extends around the back and over the face of the book.
The stiii or outer cover B is provided with elastic loops a, for receiving envelopes, postal WILLIAM H. ELLIS. WILLIAM MCDONALD.
