W. N. PATTESON. Burglar-Alarms.
No. 195,946. Patented Oct. 9, I877.
I WITNESSES TOR.

N-PETIERS. PHOTO-LITHQGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. PATTESON, OF FRANKFURT, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE W. MILLER.
IMPROVEMENT IN BU RGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,946, dated October 9, 1877; application filed September 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM N. PATTESON, of Frankfort, in the county of Franklin and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Alarm and Door'Bell, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents my improved device adjusted as a door'bell. Fig. 2 represents the device adjusted as a safety-alarm. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the guard-plate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for attachment to the shank of a door-knob, a chair-round, or other support in such a way as to be rung by the slightest movement of the object to which it is attached, which may also be used as a doorbell, and which shall be simple in construction, conveniently attached and detached, and reliable in use.
The invention consists in the combination of the bar provided with a foot upon its lower end, the rubber strap, the strip of spring-steel, and the bell with each other, to adapt the device to be attached to the shank of a doorknob or other support; in the combination of the square bar, provided with a knob or crank upon its outer end, the bar, the strip of spring-steel, and the bell with each other; and in the combination of the plate provided with the two outwardly-projecting arms, the two bars, the strip of spring-steel, and the bell with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
Ais a small bar, which has a foot, a formed upon its lower end. The lower side of the foot a is concaved, and is cross filed or toothed to keep it from slipping upon the object to which it is attached.
B is a short rubber strap, one end of which is attached to one end of the foot to by a small screw, and its other end has a hole or slit formed in it to be hooked upon another small screw attached to the other end of the said foot a.
In the upper end of the bar A is formed a slot to receive the end of a strip, 0, of springsteel, where it is secured by a setscrew, a. In a shoulder or projection formed upon the side of the upper part of the bar A is formed a second slot, at right angles with the first slot, to receive the end of the steel strip 0, where it is secured in place by a set-screw, a To the other end of the steel strip 0 is attached a bell, D.
With this construction, when the bar A is secured to the shank of a door-knob by the rubber strap B, the slightest movement of the said knob will ring the bell 1), and thus give the alarm.
In the same way the device may be attached to the round of a chair, and the chair placed near an open window or door, so that the slightest movement of the said chair will ring the bell and give an alarm.
When the device is to be used as a doorbell a square bar, E, having a knob or small crank, F, attached to its outer end, is passed through the casing of a door, and through a square hole in the bar A, where it is secured in place by a set-screw, a, so that the slightest turn of the bar E will ring the bell. In this case the end of the steel strip 0 is secured in the lower slot of the bar A.
G is a small plate, which is secured to the inner easing of the door in such a position that the bar E may pass through a round hole formed in it.
Upon the side edges of the plate G are formed outwardly-proj acting arms 9, which receive the bar A between them, and prevent the said bar from being turned too far toward either side.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the bar A, provided with the foot a upon its lower end, the rubber strap B, the strip 0 of spring-steel, and the bell D with each other, to adapt the device to be attached to the shank of a door-knob or other support, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the square bar E, provided with a knob or crank upon its outer end, and the bell D with each other, substantially the bar A, the strip 0 of spring-steel, and the as herein shown and described. bell D with each other, substantially as herein shown and described. WILLIAM PATTESON' 3. The combination of the plate G, provided Witnesses: with the two outwardLv-prqjeeting arms g, the DAN. DRISCOLL,
bar E, the bar A, the strip of spring-steel C, SAML. H. BRADLEY.
