Description

A. s HUBBELL.
PEN-HOLDER.- v
Patented July 17, 1877.
n a m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALGERNON S. HUBBELL, OF NORWICH, OONNEOTICQ'T.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l93,l l8, dated 'July 17, 1877 application filed January 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALGERNON SIDNEY HUBBELL, of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pen-Holders; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a partof this specificication, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical exterior view of my improved pen-holder, showing the pen withdrawn between the prongs of the holder for protection. Fig. 2 shows an edge sectional view of the holder with the pen in position for use. Fig. 3 shows a front sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is an end view of the slide, and the clamp for holding tnepen. My invention consists in the slotted stick, in combination with the peculiarly-constructed clasp for holding the pen, and the sliding ferrule, whereby the penis easily withdrawn between the fork or prongs of the stick or holder, and protected from all danger of beisrzig injured by falling, or carried in thepocket,
To enable others to make and use my improved pen-holder, 1 will describe it more in detail, referring to the drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
The stock or holder A may be made of any suitable hard wood, by machinery fitted for the purpose, in the most expeditious manner, one end being cut out, leaving an opening, a, cut through of sufficient size to admit the clasp B, and any ordinary-sized steel or gold pen, b. The clasp B is made of a single piece of sheet metal, the ends being bent in such a manner as to form spring-nippers c 0, into which the heel of the pen is inserted, they yielding sufliciently to receive and hold any ordinary-sized pen.
The stock or holder A, being all the way of the same size, is provided with an open metal slide or ferrule, D, surrounding it, to which the clasp B is attached by a pin, d, passing through the same, by which the clasp and pen are drawn into the slot or opening a, for protection between the prongs e e, or thrust out for use, there being friction enough betweenthe holderA and the ferrule D to hold the pen in any required position.
A stop-pin, f, may be put in either the slide or stick at any desired point, to prevent the ferrule D from coming off.
It will readily be seen that the advantages of my improved pen-holder are its extreme simplicity, durability, and cheapness, it being manufactured and sold for less than onehalf the cost of any other slide pen-holder that incases and protects the pen, making it equally available, both for the desk and to carry in the pocket.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted stick -or holder A, provided with the opening a, in combination with the clasp B, as constructed for holding different sizes of pens, and the sliding ferrule D, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name to the above specification for improvement in pen-holders.
ALGERNON SIDNEY HUBBELL.
