Patented Sept. 12, 1933 UNITED STA TES COVER SUPPORTING MEANS FOR WASHING MACHINES AND THE .LIKE
Walter K. Voss, Davenport, Iowa Application January 26, 1931. Serial No. 511,157 8 Claims. (01. 68-30) The present invention relates to cover supporting means, and more in particular to cover supporting means for washing machines and the like.
Among the objects ofthe present invention is to provide a novel means for supporting a cover of a container, such as the tub of a washing machine or the like, such means being secured to the tub or container and projecting therefrom whereby the cover may be readily placed thereon and be supported thereby when it is desired. to inspect or remove the contents in the tub or container, or to otherwise remove the cover.
The invention comprehends the idea of providing a novel supporting means, which, together with the rim of the container, such as the tub of a washing machine or the like, will provide a three point support, whereby thecover is evenly supported, and may be readily moved into this position by the operator or attendant when it is desired to remove the cover from the tub or container.
vantages are comprehended by the invention as will later appear, and as are inherently possessed thereby.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a washing machine having an embodiment of the bracket of the present invention secured thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the washing machine of Fig. 1 of the drawing, and discloses the cover thereof supported in accordance with the Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the washing machine of Fig. 1 of the drawing, and discloses more in detail the present novel cover supporting means and manner in which the cover is supported thereby.
Fig. {l is a fragmentary vertical cross sectional view of the washing machine of Fig. 1 of the member of the present novel cover supporting means.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, an embodiment of the present novel supporting means is shown in connection with a washing machine having a tub 1 supported upon the legs 2, a removable cover 3 being provided with a flanged edge adapted to fit within the rim of thetubl.
The presentcover supporting means comprises a bracket member 4, and a cover supporting member 5, mounted in the bracket member'and projecting laterally and upwardly from the tub 1.
The bracket member 4 comprises a body portion 6 having laterally extending lugs or ears 7, the bracket member being secured to the tub 1 by means of bolts 8, or the like, passing through openings in the tub 1. .Washers 9 fitting over the bolt 8 and a plug 9 fitting in a recess of a projection 10 at the lower end of the bracket 7 member, provide a resilient connection between this member and the tub when the nuts 11 are drawn tight on the bolt 8 so as to. provide a rigid connection between the bracket member and the tub, and to eliminate any possibility of 0 damage to the enamel or covering of the tub, or noise should the bracket member become loosened; Y
The lower'part of'the body portion 6 of the bracket member is provided with an opening or bore 12 closed at its lower end, while the upper part thereof extends outwardly and 7 upwardly at an angle, as shown, and is provided with a trough-like groove 13.
The cover supporting member 5 is shown as comprising a rod or the like having its lower end 14 bent as clearly disclosed in Fig. 4 so as to fit within the bore 12 and to rest or seat in the groove 13 of the bracket member. An opening, such as the opening 13* may be provided in P the body portion 6 of the bracket member so that the operator or attendant of the washing machine may be advised when the member 14 is properly in place in the bore 12 of the bracket member. The upper end of the supporting member 14 is bent to form a substantially circular eye 15 having a piece of rubber tubing 16 or the like fitting thereover, this tubing extending downwardly .over a portion of the member 14, thus preventing the upper end and eye 15 of the sup- 9 porting member as well as the knob 17 when in the position shown in Fig. 3, from becoming too hot for handling, and providing means for eliminating noiseand clatter when the cover 3 is placed on the support therefor. The eye 15 whereby the cover 3 is evenly and substantially supported. The cover support is readily accessible to the operator of the washing machine, and the cover may be easily removed and re-. placed at any time. As more clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the.c over,,,when support ed by the present novel supporting means; pro.-
vides a convenient shelf or support for the agitator 19 when the same is removed from thedrive shaft 20 of'the washing machine.
While I have herein described and upon. the drawing shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it is. to beunderstood that .the invention is'not limited thereto, but may comprehend other constructions, arrangements of parts, details and features, without departing. from'thespirit'loff the invention.
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
1.' In a" washing machine having a tub, a cover for said tub, and bracket means secured to said tub, said means including an enlarged cover supporting portion upon which the cover may be placed and thereby provide together with the rim of said tub a three point support for the cover when the same is removed from the tub.
2. 'In a washing machine having atub, a removable cover. forsaid tub',fm.eans projecting from said cover for lifting the same, said cover having a depressed portion around said means, and means secured to said tub a'daptedto fit in said depressed portion and around said projecting means for supporting said cover when thesame isplac'ed'thereon.
3. In a washing machine having a tub, a removable cover for said. tub,'mean s projectingfrom said cover for lifting the same, said cover having a depressed portion arou'ndfsaid means, a bracket securedto said tub, and meanslmounted in said bracket adapted to fit' in said depressed portion and around said projecting means for supporting said cover when the same is placed thereon.
4. In a washing machine having a tub, a re movable cover for said tub, means projecting from said cover for lifting the same, said cover having a depressed portion around said means, a bracket secured to said tub, and a cover supporting member removably mounted in said bracket, said member having an enlarged portion adapted to fitin said depressed portion and around said projecting means for supporting said cover when the same is placed thereon.
5. In a washing machine, the combination of a tub having an open top, a closure therefor, and a. stationary bracket rigid with said tub having a closure-engaging part disposed adjacent to and slightly above the top of said tub and arranged together with the rim of the tub to provide a three-point suspension. for said closure in which the closure is substantially horizontal but is slightly tilted toward the tub and the lower edge of the closure extended intothe open face of. the tub. 1
. 6. In a washing machine, the combinationof a tub, a separableclosure therefor, and a stationary bracket rigid with said tub butremovable therefrom and disposed adjacentto the tub for supporting engagement with a part of said closure, said bracket beingdimensioned so that the closure when supported in part thereby will rest upon the tub at spaced points with apart of the cover overhanging the interior of the tub.
7. In a washing machine having a tub, a removable cover for said tub, means projecting from saidcover for lifting the same, a bracket member secured to said tub, and a cover supporting member mounted in said'bracket and having apart stationarily positioned with respect to said tub arranged to receive said'projecting means to support said cover. when said cover isremoved 1 from thetub a nd placed thereon.
8. In a washing machine having a tub, are
