Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1'7, 1917.
Application illed July 17, 1916." Serial No. 109,598.
To all whom it may concern: I 7
Be it known that I, HALVOR H. Lrcrm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Laundry Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates generally to laundry apparatus and more part1cularly to washing machines; and has for one of 1ts ob ects to improve the construction and lncrease the efliciency and utility of machines of t h1s character. Another object is the prov1s1on in a washing machine of a hot water tank or receptacle wherein water or art1cles of clothing, before being passed to the washing machine, are respectively heated and boiled, reference particularly bein made to the means by which the tank is supported 1n position against the machine, and to the arrangement of the heating elements with reference to the tank and the machine. For a consideration of what I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the following description and claims appended thereto.
These, together with such other ob ects as may hereinafter appear, or are incident to my invention, I attain by means of the construction illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a side view in elevation of a washing machine to which the heating tank is applied;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the tank;
Fig. 8 is a central vertical section taken through the tank and the intermediate heating device;
Fig. 4 is a view in top plan of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the tank and its heating devices.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates the body portion of a washing machine having a bin ed top cover 6 and supporting legs 7, ant? 8 designates a heating tank provided with a curved base portion 9 and cover 10. Both of the covers 6 and 10 are disposed in substantially the same plane,
so that the contents of the tank 8, whether hot water or boiled articles of clothing, may
be readily transferred to the washing m..- chine 5 upon removal of said covers.
cans are provided for suspending the tank from the machine in a contiguous spaced relation thereto, and comprises a lower spacing bracket 11 secured to the inner face 8 of the tank, and an upper spacing bracket 12 disposed centrally of said face, said brackets extending rearwardly therefrom to contact with the inner face 5 of the washing machine and serving to provide suflicient space between the confronting inner faces of the tank and machine for the purposes hereinafter set forth. Cooperating with said brackets are rearwardly extending tank supporting elements 13 having terminal hooks 13 adapted to engage studs 14 mounted at each'side of the upper portion of the inner face 5 of the machine.
The numeral 15 designates an electrical heating device comprising resistance coil elements 16 and a side casing 17 forming a mounting therefor, said casing carried between the confronting faces 5 and 8 of the machine body and tank and secured inter? "mediately by bolts 18 to the spacing brackets 11 and 12. Additional brackets 12" may be provided at the sides of the device 15 if desired. Above this device is a space 19 into which the tank cover 10 is designed to project when removed (see Fig. 1), said cover passing intermediately of the supporting elements 13 and being terminally formed on its front under face with a lip 10 designed to retain the cover in the removed depending position as shown in dotted lines in said figure.
The numeral 20 indicates the main heating device comprising electrical resistance coil elements 21 arranged in an outer casing 22 constructed to conform with the curved base 9 of the tank, said casing provided with terminal flanges 23 secured by bolts 24 to the sidesof the tank whereby the heat generated in the coils 21 is directed against the curved base 9 to heat the contents of the g weaves desirably provided in the form of a securing bolt 25 which passes through spaced flange members 26 and 27 depending from the tank, and whose inner end 25 is detachably engaged in. a fiange28, depending from the machine body, by a nut 29. In this way the tank is rigidly secured in position, and at the same time it may be readily dissociated from the washing machine body whenever desired. It will also be apparent that the supporting means provided for the tank are ofsuch a character as to permit the suspension of the tank from any ordinary type of washing machine.-
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the essential features, construction and advantages of my invention, will be readily understood by those skilled in the art without requiring a more extended explanation.
What I claim is:-
1. The combination of a pair of liquid container tanks associated together and having spaced confronting inner faces and an open sided frame mounted intermediately of said inner faces, 'and a series of heating elements carried by said frame in an opera; tive heating relation with the adjacent basal portions of said inner faces.
2. The combination of apair of liquid container tanks having spaced confronting inner faces, a frame mounted intermediately of said inner faces, said frame open at its sides and serving to space said faces, heating elements terminally carried in series by said frame and operatively disposed with reference to the lower portions of. said faces, and securing means extend-.
tion of a heating tank having a rounded base portion, heating elements serially arranged about said portion, a segmental closure cover therefor having inwardly bent terminals and side portions in which said heating elements are terminally mounted, and securing means for said bent terminals.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this s ecification.
