HINGE CONSTRUCTION.
Original application filed August 25,1925, Serial No. 52,334. Divided and this application filed February 24, 1926.
This invention relates to improvements in hinge constructions and particularly for use on water heaters for exhibition purposes. These heaters are for heating water in a storage tank or range boiler by pipe connections with steam, air, or hot water heating systems for residences, apartments, or wherever installed.
Heretofore it has been a common practice to cut away a portion of the inclosing casing for exhibiting the water heating coils within the enclosing casing. This practice not only expensive but also destroys the heater for use as a water heating piece of apparatus.
An object of the present invention is to provide a hinge construction whereby it may be quickly attached to the casing and cover plate member of the heater by means of the usual clamping bolts which are located in the openings of the hinge and which pass through the bolt clamping openings of the casing and the cover plate member respectively. Such a construction permits the cover plate member to be swung open and the interior of the casing and coils exhibited, by simply attaching a hinge to the cover plate and casing. I
As a modification, the casing and cover plate member may be formed with integral projections for permitting the door or cover plate member to be swung fully open, and, at the same time, to be closed and clamped in place by bolts which pass through the registering openings in the casing and cover.
For display purposes the securing top, bottom, and side bolts are removed, and a hinge secured to the cover plate and casing.
The cover plate member, to which the ends of the coil are attached may now be swung open to fully display the interior construction and the coil, thus avoiding the necessity of cutting away a portion of the casing and therefore destroying the device for service.
The present invention is a division in part of the application filed by me August 25, 1925, Ser. No. 52,334, for auxiliary heater.

Referring to the drawings in detail:
1 designates an inclosing casing withinwhich steam, hot water, or air circulates for heating the water in the coils 2 which are attached to the inside of the cover member 3 as indicated at 4 and 5. The steam or water is understood to enter the casing 1 through the pipe 6 and is discharged through the opening at 7. I The casing 1 may be supported in any suitable way as by a standard comprising the pipe 6 and the base 20. The cover I plate member 3 is clamped or secured to the casing 1* by means of the bolts 8 which are passed through the registering openings 9 and 10. 11 and 12 designate the two leaves of the hinge construction indicated as a whole by the reference numeral 13. 14 are the pivotal pins for connecting the leaves 11 and 12 of the hinge together. This hinge, as
shown, is formed with openings 13 that are so located as to correctly register with the openings 9 and 10 of the cover plate and cas-' ing members, whereby when the bolts 8 are placed in the openings 9, 10, and 13, the hinge may be secured to the cover and casing respectively.
This construction permits the door 3 to be thrown fully open for exhibiting the interior construction of the heater without in any way destroying the construction of the water heater, or of the casing and cover, by cutting away portions which is the present custom. As shown in Fig. 1 the bolts 8 and the hinge 13 are used to clamp the cover to the easing l, and, at the same time secured the hinge 13 in place.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the casing l and the cover 3 respectively are each formed with integral lugs 15 and 16. These-lugs are each formed with registering openings to receive the pintle pins 17.
The bolts 8 as illustrated in Fig. 5 serve to clamp the cover member 3 to the casing.
The water heating copper coil 2, being attached to the cover 3, is fully displayed when the cover is swung open.
In practice the heaters and hinges may be separately supplied to the trade. ,To attach the hinge 13 it is only necessary to remove all of the bolts from the finished article, shown in Fig. 1 and attach the hinge 13 by passing bolts, or rivets, through the openings 13 of the hinge and the registering openings in the cover and casing.
What I claim is:
1. A display assembly for water heaters, comprising a body member and a cover member -lorming a watertight casing, each of said members provided with an outwardly extending flange having a plane front surface, said flanges provided with spaced apertures, a standard supporting one of said members, a hinge plate having apertures registering with a plurality of the apertures in the flange of that member, and fastening elements passing through the apertures in the hinge plate and through a pair of the apertures in the flange of the last mentioned member for rigidly connecting said hinge plate to the last mentioned member, a second hinge plate pivotally connected to and supported by the first mentioned hinge plate, said second hinge plate having apertures spaced toregister with a pair of the apertures in the flange of the other mem her, and fastening elements passing through the apertures in the second'hinge plate and in the last mentioned flange for supporting the last mentioned member from tie second hinge plate.
2. A closed container comprising an open front body portion, a hollow closure for said front, a yoke detachably connected with and extending lengthwise of one side edge o't said body portion and having its arms m'o'jecting laterally from said edge, a yoke detachably connected with, extending lengthwise of and having its arms projecting laterally from one side edge oft said closure, and means for pivotally connecting the arms of one yoke to the arms of the other yoke.
