signor to The Apex Electrical Manufacturing Company, Cleveland,
Ohio
Ohio, a corporation of Application February 1, 1933, Serial No. 654,635
3 Claims.
This invention relates to casing lids and in particular to utility covers for laundry machines.
It is the object of this invention to provide a combined pan or container and cover for the tub of a laundry machine which when occupying one position it serves as a tub cover and when occupying a reverse position it serves as a container for the articles being laundered.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a casing lid hereinafter illustrated and described in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawing, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wringer-type washing machine illustrating one use of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the improved tub cover shown on a supporting bench in position to catch and receive articles passed through the wringer of a washing machine.
Figure 3 is a plan elevational View of the underside of the tub cover, and;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional detail view taken on line 44, Figure 3.
For purposes of illustrating one mode of practicing the invention, the improved tub cover to which this invention relates is shown in connection with a wringer-type washing machine having a washing tub I carried on a base 2 which is in turn carried by supporting legs 3. The tub cover is equally useful in connection with combined washing and extracting machines of two tub type illustrated in Kirby Patent No. 1,842,030, The machine is provided with a wringer 4 pivotally mounted on a wringer supporting column 5, the upper end of which is provided with stops engageable by the locking lever 6 whereby the wringer may be swung to various adjusted positions about the axis of the supporting column 5.
Within the tub of the machine there is located an agitator or dasher l. The dasher and the wringer 4 are operatively connected to power driven gearing carried in a gear case 8 which is supported by the base 2 beneath the tub of the machine.
A utility cover 9 is provided for the open top of the tub I. This cover may be conveniently formed from a piece of sheet metal and it is provided with a deeply dished body portion and an outwardly turned rim portion Ill. The tub I is formed with an inwardly extending ledge I l which provides a seat for the rim portion 10 of the cover.
A rubber guard ring or gasket l2 having an inwardly facing slot I 3 is provided to cover the peripheral edge of the cover. A hand hole 14 is formed near the edge of the cover to provide a convenient means for handling the same. The marginal edge of that portion of the cover defining the hole II is provided with a guard ring l5 having an outwardly facing groove l6 for the reception of this portion of the cover. Annular stifiening ribs ll may be formed in the cover to increase its rigidity. The rim portion I 0 of the cover is extended inwardly a slight distance as at Hi to provide a means for handling the cover when in its reverse position in the tub.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate the two uses of my improved tub cover. In the full line position of the cover in Figure 1 it is shown in the position it occupies when it serves as a cover for a tub. In the dotted line or reverse position of the cover in Figure 1 it is shown as a receiving pan in position to receive articles fed through the wringer from a laundry tray or rinse tub (not shown). In Figure 2 the cover is shown in position to receive articles fed through the wringer from the washer tub.
Furthermore it is to be understood that the particular form of lid or cover shown and de- I scribed, and the particular procedure set forth are presented for purposes of explanation and that various modifications of said device and procedure can be made without departure from the invention as described in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A cover of the type described comprising a deeply dished body having an annular side wall portion with its marginal edge bent over in the form of a substantially flat annulus extending both inwardly and outwardly of the cover side wall and substantially perpendicular thereto.
2. A cover of the type described comprising a relatively deeply dished body having a substantially fiat top and an annular side wall portion at the periphery thereof with its marginal portion bent over in the form of a substantially flat annulus extending both inwardly and outwardly of the cover side wall and substantially perpendicular thereto.
3. A cover of the type described comprising a relatively deeply dished body having a substantially fiat top and a side wall portion projecting from the. periphery of the cover top, said side wall terminating in a flange which is substantially parallel to the cover top and projects a substantial distance beyond each side of the side wall.
