IMPROVEMENT IN CHECK-REINS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,957,

dated June 12, 1877 application filed January 6, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HAAS, of Delmar, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Reins and Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is adetail view, showing manner of forming the square check, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the buckle detached from the check.

Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate like parts.

My invention relates to an improved construction of check-reins and buckles for driving-lines, in which provision is made for forming the check of a square shape, and provided at each end with the ordinary billets, the whole being formed of one piece of leather and connected to the buckles without stitching or riv eting, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

The square check is formed of a strip of leather of the desired length and about one inch Wide, which is split through the center to its juncture with the billets d, and the two parts thus formed are doubled over upon each other and united by stitching or sewing, a groove or crease being cut on each side to receive the stitching, as. shown at l in Fig. 2, thereby protecting the same from wear and exposure to the weather. The check thus formed, and having the billets d at each end, is arranged as shown in Fig. 1, and is conotf or split by constant wear.

it will be observed that, in the construction of the ordinaryronnd or flat checks, the stitching or sewing is exposed to the wear of the rings on the harness, as also to the exposure of the weather, thereby soon ripping out, and, further, the same being connected to the buckles by stitching or sewing, is liable to tear By means of my present improvements these defects are entirely obviated, inasmuch as the stitching in the square check is confined below the surface of the leather, and its connection with the buckles effected, as already described, without sewing or riveting, thereby producing a strong, durable, and effective check-rein.
