Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFT:
GRANVILLE M. BREINIG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN, BARREL-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent` No. 191,644, dated June 5, 1877 application filed May 16, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GRANVILLE MILLER BREINIG, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Kegs, which is fully set forth in the following speciication and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top View of a keg with my improvements attached; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same.
Previous to my invention, to open a keg at the end, it was necessary to start the hoops, which loosened the staves, and more or less of the contents, if of liquid material, escaped; consequently they were ordinarily removed at the bung.
The object of my invention is to provide a keg the head of which may be removed without starting the hoops, and reinserted and secured at will, whereby loss of material will be prevented, and painters and others can use the keg immediately, as a pot or vessel in which to stir and mix their paints, without recoopering.
A represents the keg; B B, the anges; C C, the keys; D, the head; E, the croze H, the shoulder.
The operation is as follows: Head D, being inserted, rests on a shoulder, H, just below the croze. Flanges B B are then inserted upon the head, in croze E, and keys C C placed in position between the ends of anges B B, locking them securely.
The keys may be secured to the heads by screws or otherwise.
It is manifest that to remove the head all that is necessary is to take out the keys and flanges, and the head is at liberty to be lifted.
The head might be secured by other means than the precise keys and anges I have pointed out; but these seem as simple as any. A sti spring-wire might be placed in the croze, with its ends turned in at right angles for an inch or so toward the center of' the head, and the key secured between the'ends,'
after the wire was sprung into the croze.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of flanges B B, keys C C, croze E, head D, and shoulder H, operating together substantially as and for the purposes specified.
GRANVILLE M. BREINIG. Witnesses:
S. J. GORDON, JOHN W. RIPLEY.
