No. 205,075. Patented June 18, 1878-..

THOMAS J. GRIFFIN, BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO CLARENCE BROOKS & CO., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,075, dated June 18, 1878 application filed May 15, 1878.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TEos. J. GRIFFIN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil- Cans; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cans for varnish, oils, or other liquids, which are provided with a single nozzle to form both the inlet and out.
let to the same 5 and the nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a hinged lid for the nozzle, for hermetically sealing the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a varnishcan with nozzle and lid. Fig. 2is an enlarged vertical section of the nozzle and lid. Fig. 3 shows the fastening pin or key.
Avrepresents an ordinary can, such as are used for varnish, oils, or other liquids, and provided at the top with a nozzle, B.
O represents the lid for the nozzle, hinged to one side thereof, as shown. This lid is stamped out of sheet metal, of circular or other form to correspond with the form or shape of the nozzle.
'In the under side of the lid is formed a groove at a., to receive the rubber packing b, as shown in Fig. 2, said rubber packing fitting between the vertical walls of the groove, and when the lid is closed presses down on the edge of the nozzle B all around.
The lid O is provided with a hinged hasp, D, which closes over a tongue, F, secured to and projecting from the side of the nozzle. In this tongue is madea hole for the insertion of a spring-key, d, or other suitable fastenmg.
When the lid or cover is locked down with the rubber inside, the can-is perfectly tight, thereby rendering it unnecessary to use any corks, and the can is at the same time always in readiness for the parties consuming the article in the can.
This device may also be used on tin preserve or fruit cans.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the nozzle B of a can, the hinged cover O, having groove'a in its under side, the rubber packing b, hasp D, perforated tongue F, and key d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of May, 1878.
THOS. J. GRIFFIN.
Witnesses J. M. MASON, D. O. FrTz GERALD.
