Be it known that I, ALFRED G. ScHoETTnL, a citizen of the United States, residfing'in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Securing Slip- Covers Upon Cans and Containers, o the following is a speciiication. A
This invention relates to a means for securing slip covers upon cans a'nd containers. And the invention consists in providin the slip coverl'with an outwardly projecting ad and the container body with anl inwardlyprojecting bead, the two` beads bein alined together when the slip cover is in p ace and in further providing a flexible wire or key to'be inserted in the cavity formed by the twogrooves, thus locking the cover to the body while the key remains in place.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, Figure 1 ,is a side elevation of a can or container and its locked slip cover embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Il`ig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In said drawing, A is a can or container. B is a slip cover for said container.V c is an inwardly projecting circumferential bead or groove in the body of the can near its upper or open end. b is a coincident outwardly projecting bead or groove in-the slip cover which, when the slip cover is applied to the groove'in the can body. C is a flexible key which may'consist wire of a. proper size to pass readily into the cavity formed by the oppositely turned". and coincident beads or grooves inthe container and cover. c represents one end of this key or annealedwire bent at an angle to aord a hand holdfor its more convenient manipulation in inserting and removing the key from its seat. D is an opening or portal cut in the slip cover at the bead or groove so that when the slip cover is ap lied to the container the key may be rea ily inserted into the seat 0r removed therefrom for locking and unlocking the same. In the instance illustrated both the container and its slip cover are' made of sheet tal but this is not essential to the invention as the container may obviously be made of hard fiber and the cover of sheet metal, or both container and slip cover may be made of fiber or paper and some of the results 'of my invention achieved thereby. Although the key is shown to be circular in cross section to correspond to the seat or cavity ,having a circular cross section,`it is obvious that the cross section of the key maybe that of a fiat band-or rectangle and the seat of corresponding shape.` .So too, in
the instance illustrated, a cylindriocontainer shown, but it '1s obvious is equally applicable to other forms of container than cylindric, or even curvilinear. And while it is preferred and slip cover are to employ only a single key, it is quite ob.
vious that more than one key may be used, and indeed in rectangular containers more than a single key would be necessary.
This slip cover -container is peculiarly to proprietary goods -where the seal the prevent loss of use of the package. Since this package when filled, closed, locked and sealed cannot accidentally open during transportation and handling, cannot beopened Without destroying the seal, and when opened in the hands of the consumer by the removal of the key, becomes a container with a simple, easily handled slip cover that requires no tool or' special manipulation for its opening and closing. This lockable, scalable slip cover container possesses the' following advantages. It is very cheap and easy to manufacture; it is secure againstl accidental removal or loosening of the cover during transport; it may be securely sealed;
package during transportation to .so contents or fraudulent rethe lockmaf be easily opened; and finally in the han s of the consumer it may be treated as an ordinary slip cover can.
I claim 1. A container of the character described, comprising in combination: a can body having an inturned annular bead; a cover having a downturned flange adapted to slip over the top of the can body and having an out-turned annular bead arranged t0 register w`th the bead on the can body to form a peripheral groove when the cover is in place,` the out-turned bead being Jformed with an aperture; and a removable peripheral locking member fitting in said groove and having an end adapted vto be drawn through said aperture, the lower portion of the bead of the cover being inwardly extended and locked beneath the said locking member to secure the cover to the body, the locking member being adapted to be 1ithdrawn endwise from said groove to allow the cover to be lifted from the can.

A container of the character describedrcomprising in combination: aocan body having a necked-in open end formed with an inturned annular bead; a cover having a downturned flange adapted to slip over the top of the can body and having an outturned annular bead arranged to register with the bead on the can body to form a peripheral groove when the cover is in place, the Out-turned bead being formed with an aperture; and a removable peripheral looking member fitting in said groove between the cover flange and the body and having an end adapted to be drawn through said aperture, the lower portion of the bead of the cover being inwardly extended and locked beneath the said locking member to secure the cover to the body, the locking member being adapted to be withdrawn endwise fromv said groove to allow the cover to be lifted from the can.

A container of the character described, comprising in combination: a can body having an intur-ned annular bead; a cover having a downturned flange adapted' t0 slip over the ton of the can body and having an out-turned annular bead arranged to registeiV` with the bead on the can body to form a peripheral groove place, the out-turned bead beingformed 'ith an aperture; ripheral locking member fitting 1n said groove between the cover flange and the body and extending continuously around the can and having an end adapted to be drawn through said aperture, the lower p0rtion of the bead of the cover wardly extended and locked beneath the said locking member to secure the cover to the body, the locking member being adapted to be withdrawn endwise from said groove to allowy the cover to be liftedf'rom the can.
4. A container having a body formed with an exterior circumferential bent-in groove, and a cover having a circumferential bent-out groove which is arranged to register oppositely with the said groove or the body when the containeris closed by said cover, the said cover having an opening into its groove for the longitudinal and circumferential insertion of a peripheral and removable locking member.
