SHEET-METAL CAN.
` Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1e, 190e.
Application -tiled Jlily 19, 1905. Serial No. 270,380,
Virginia, have invented a new and useful Imrovement in Sheet-Metal Cans, of which the ollowing is a specification.
My inventionY relates to improvements in sheet-metal cans, and more particularly to cans designedfor containiiigsmokin #tobacco for pi es or cigarettes or other artic es which may e poured out of thecan when desired for use..
The object of m invention is to provide a sheet-metal-can o a neat, simple, efficient, and durable construction having a removable cap closin the opening in the top of the can through w 'ch the can is lled andy in which the removable cap itself is furnished with a small' or pouring opening and a movable plate for closing the same, so that the contents of the can may be conveniently poured out, as required for use, which may be cheaply Inanugiactured, and in which the movable. closin plate'will besuitably guided and propery supported." My inventlon consists. in the means I employ and herein shown and described forv ractically accomplishing this object or resul? -In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a ver tical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. -Fig. 4 is an inside plan view of the removable cap, and Fie. 5 is an enlarged detail section of the cap. n the drawings, A representgthe body of the can or vessel, B its top or u per head, and
C its bottom or lower head. he body A has preferably a lock or folded side seam' a at one of the corners of the can, and the head B is furnished, referably, with a countersink b and flange d?, folded, or other seam a. -The bottom C is also referably furnished with a countersinir c and) flange c', united. to the body A by a folded, rolled, or other seam c2.
The top or upper head B is furnished with an upwardly-projecting neck'or cylindrical flan e b2, surrounding the filling-opening B in t e canand having at its'upper ed e an inwardly and horizontally projecting ange b3. The neck b2 of the top 1s preferably furnished With screw-threads b'1L to receive theunited to the bodyAbya rolled,.
removable cap D, 'which has a depending ange d, furnished with screw-threads d', to engage the screw-threads on the integral neel; b2 of the top or upper head B ofthe can. The removable screw-cap D is provided with4 asmall or segmental pouring-opening D at one side of its center Aand on its inside with a rotary closing-plate secured to the cap D by a pivot f for o ening Iand closing the pouring Opening in t e cap. When the screwecap 1s applied to the screw-top of the can, the ro ta closing-plateFiitsbetween and isguided an iirml supported on the inside by the horizonta ange L3 of the screw-neck b2 of the top B of the can and upon the outside by the marginalpor-tion d2 of the removable cap"A D adjacent tothe opening Din the cap. To.v
further guide and sup ort the rotary sector it is furnished with" shaped closing-plate an Aintegralilip f 'near its circular edge f,
'which fits on the outside of the circular marginal portionor rim d5 ofthe cap D. This Integral-,lip f2 also serves as a stopte limit the rotary movement of the closingplate F by its engagement with the curved ends D2 D2 of the opening D in the cap D. The r0- tar closing-plate F is alsp preferably furnis ed with an integral proj ection f 3, stamped up therein for engagement'of the thumb or nger nail to facilitate the turning of the rotary closing-plate, although the lip f? will also answer for this urpose. The pivot f of the rotary closing-p ate F may preferably bea rivet, which vafter being inserted is upset to j secure the rotary closing-plate to the screw cap D. As the rotary closing-piate fits between the screw-cap and the inturned mar gin or horizontal flange b of the neck b2, it will be understood that the rim or peripheral portion of the rotary plate is thusirmly guided and supported on both sides or above and below, so that there is no danger of the.
thin sheet-metal sector-.shaped closing-plate being punched. throu h or bent or distorted out of shape, and by tflhis means .l ain enabled to produce a very neat and convenient,
stron and durable can for containin smokgf g ing-tobacco or otherarticles and one which :may also be manufactured at small cost.
I clairnu 1. A tobacco or other can'having a top or upper head furnished with a screwthreaded neck, provided with an inwardly-projectingiiange at its upper edge, and a screw-cap having 'a segmental pouring-opening therein, and a rotary segmental closing-plate inside and pivoted to said screw-cap andtting between and guided and supported by the screw-cap on the outside and said inturned flange of said screw-neck of the can-top on the inside, Said rotary closing-plate having an integral lip itting outside and engaging the marginal portion of the screw-cap adjacent to said opening therein, substantially as specified.
' 2. In a can, the combination with a top or upper head having a screw-neck prei` :filed With an inturned flange at its upper edge, of a screw-cap having a segmental opening therein, and a rotary clos1ngplate fitting inside the cap, and guided and supported at its outer circular portion by the inturned iiange on said soreW-necli, substantially as specified.
' 3; In a can, the combination with a top or upper head having a screw-neck provided Wlth an inturnedv flange at its upper edge, of a screw-cap having a segmental opening therein, and a rotary closing-plate fitting inside the cap, and guided and supported at its outer circular portion by the inturned flange on said screw-neck, said closing-plate having an integral lip iitting outside and engaging the marginal rim portion of the screw-cap, substantially as specified.
4. In a can, the combination with a top or upper head having a screw-neck provided With an inturned flange at its upper edge, of a screwpap having a segmental opening there in, andv a rotary closing-plate fitting inside the cap and guided and supported at its outer circular portion by the inturned flange on said screw-neck, said closing-plate having an integral lip iitting outside and engaging the marginal rim portion of the screw-cap, said rotary closing-plate having also a projection for engagement of the nail to turn the same, substantially as specified.
