(Cl. 222-534) The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a dispensing container and moreparticularly a container having a pouring spout which is swingable from a housed position lying within the outer limits of the end seam of the container to a dispensing position wherein the spout extends above and beyond the end seam.
An object of the invention is to provide a dispensing container having a concave closure end joined to the body of the container by double seaming which end has a flat circular panel provided with an integral upstanding circular rib to which is rotatably attached the shank of a pouring spout and wherein the panel is inclined upwardly from the center of the end toward the end seam so that said spout may be positioned over the end seam for pouring and housed within the limits of the end seam when rotated to closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a dispensing container of the above type wherein the shank contacts the panel and is provided with a pouring opening at the side thereof adjacent the spout and wherein the panel is scored for rupturing to provide a pouring opening in the panel and wherein said openings are in alignment when the spout is turned to a position radially of the closure end and projecting over the end seam.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a score line for rupturing the metal which is arcuate in shape so that when a tab is formed by rupturing the metal it will remain intact with the panel.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a dispensing container embodying the improvements with the spout shown in full lines as turned to nested position within the limits of the end seam and in dotted lines the spout is shown in pouring position;
Figure 2 is a view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the container end and showing the flat panel, the circular rib and the scoring lines in the flat panel;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4, 4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a side view of the spout and supporting shank therefor detached from the can; and
Figure 6 is a plan view of the spout.
The invention is directed generally to a metal container for dispensing oil or other liquid products. The container ends are secured to the body portion preferably by double seaming. Referring to the drawings, the body of the container is shown at 1 and the top end at 2. The top end is secured to the body by a double seam 3. This top end is concave and is provided between the center of the end and the end seam 3 with a flat panel 4. The flat circular panel 4 has formed adjacent the periphery thereof a hollow rib 5. This rib is formed integral with the end. The upper outer portion of the rib is de formed outwardly as indicated at 6. The flat panel at one side of the center is scored as indicated at 7. This score line is arcuate and the ends 8, 8 of the score line are spaced from each other so that when the metal is pressed upon within the score line it will be ruptured at the score line but will leave a portion between the ends 8, 8 thereof which is unruptured. The metal tab thus formed will be bent down into the container but will remain intact therewith. This score line 7 is shaped throughout the greater part thereof so that it is concentric with the rib and lies adjacent the rib. There is also a score line 9 at the side of the panel opposite the score line 7. This score line is also arcuate in shape with the ends terminating in spaced relation so that when the metal is ruptured, the tab formed thereby will remain intact with the container end.
The dispensing member associated with this flat panel consists of a shank portion 10 which contacts the panel and extends all the way across the same to the rib. At the peripheral edge of the shank is a flange 11 which extends upwardly, outwardly and thence downwardly, thus forming an inverted U-shaped channel which receives the rib 5. The outer wall of the channel is in dented at spaced intervals as indicated at 12. These indented portions project inwardly beneath the overhanging deformed portion 6 of the rib.
The flange 11 at one side of the shank 10 is shaped to provide a pouring spout 13. The edges of the pouring spout are provided with curved upstanding portions 14,.
14 which are tangential to and join the channel shaped portion of the flange 11.
The shank has an opening 15 therethrough, the outer portion of which is arcuate. The edge 16 of this opening adjacent the spout is arcuate while the other edge portion 17 is straight and is joined to the curved edge 16. This opening in shape and size corresponds to the opening in the panel formed by rupturing metal as described above. When the spout is turned to nested position Within the limits of the double seam the opening through the panel is closed and when the spout is turned to the dotted line position the openings are in alignment. The spout at this time projects radially of the end and over the end seam so that the liquid poured from the openings will flow along the spout and be projected from the end thereof.
The shank 10 of the dispensing device is provided with an opening 18 which is close to the edge of the shank and diametrically opposed from the opening 15. This opening when the shank is in pouring position is in alignment with the opening formed by rupturing the score line 9. This brings the opening formed by rupturing the score line 9 into alignment with the opening 18 so that air may enter the container during the pouring operation. When the spout is moved to close the pouring opening it also closes the vent opening.
From the above it will be noted that applicants dispensing member is simple in construction and is easily attached to the can end. The shank of the dispensing member fits snugly within the space defined by the upstanding rib and contacts with the flat panel of the can end so as to make a very tight closure. The indentations 12, 12 hold the dispensing member in engagement with the rib and yet permits it to freely rotate thereon. The pouring spout when in closed position is housed in the space between the concave end and the limits of the double seam. Due to the fact that the flat panel inclines outwardly, the spout when rotated will move from its housed position beneath the limits of the end seam to a position wherein the spout projects over and outwardly from the end seam. The spout is a unit of the container and yet it does not in any way interfere with the packing of the containers side by side and end on end when the spout has been turned to closed position.
It is obvious that many changes may be made in the details of the construction Without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:

Azdispensing container comprising an endtdouble seamed-to the container body, saidzend within the end seam being concave andihaving a fiat circular vpanel disposed between the center-of the end and the-end seam and inclining upwardly from'thecenter tosaid end seam, a hollow upstanding circular rib formed integral with the end in'said panel and having the upperportion of the outer wall of said rib deformed outwardly, a dispensing member including a shank portion disposed within said rib and in contact with said ,panel, said shank having a peripheral inverted U-shaped fiange adapted to engage over saidrib, said'tlange having indentations at intervals adapted to engage beneath the deformed portion for rotatably attaching said shank to said container end, said peripheral flange having apouring spout projecting radiallyoutwardly therefromover the end seam when in pouring position. and beneatha plane tangent tothe end seam when in closed position, said shank having a :pouring opening at the side thereof adjacent therpouring spout, said panel at the side thereof adjacent the end seam being scored so that the metal of the panel may be ruptured to provide a pouring opening, said shank having a vent opening at the side thereof opposite the pouring spout and said panel being scored so that themetalthereof may be ruptured to provide a vent opening when the spout is in pouring position, said openings beingdisposed so that they are open for pouring when the spout is turned to a position over the endseam and said openings'are closed when the spout is turned to a position beneath the outer limits ofthe end seam.

A dispensing container comprising .an end'double seamed to the container body, said end within the end seam being concave and :having .avflat circular 'panel disposed between the center of the end and the end seam and inclining upwardly from the center to said end seam, a hollow upstanding circular rib formed integral with the end in said panel and having the upper portion of the outer wall of said rib deformed outwardly, a dispensing member including a shank portion disposed within said rib and in contact with said panel, said shank having a peripheral inverted U-shaped flange adapted to engage over said rib, said flange having indentations at intervals adapted to engage beneath the deformed portion for 'rotatably .attaching'said shank "to said container end, said peripheralflange having a-pouring spout projecting radially outwardly therefrom over the end seam whendn pouring position.andbeneath aplaneztangent to the end seam when in closedposition, said shank having a pouring opening at'the side thereof adjacent the pouring spout, said panel at the side thereof adjacent the end seam being scored so that the metal of the panel may be ruptured to provide a pouring opening, said shank having a vent opening at the side thereof opposite the pouring spout and said panel beingscored so thattthe metalthereof may be ruptured to provide a vent opening when the spout is in pouring position, said openings being disposed so that they are open for pouring when the spout is turnedto a position over the end seam and saidopenings are closed when the spout is turned to a position beneath the outer'limits of the endseam, said score linesbeingarcuate with itsend spaced whereby .the .tabs formed by rupturing the metaLremain-intact with the paneliat the far side of'the'openings from the spout when in pouring position.
