,dppiication October 4, 1941, Serial No. i'li (ci. gazeen 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in containers, and moreY particularly to improvements in a sheet metal container having a locking or sealing band to maintain the cover in position on the container;
"in various types of containers, a cover is fitted on the body portion and maintained in position by a sealing or locking band in the form of a rirfT member which is adapted to engage the body portion and the cover. While these containers may be of various sizes depending upon the material to be shipped or stored, the present invention is illustrated in connection with a relatively small sheet metal container which may be of type commonly employed for holding or the like. Thus, a cover is fitted over the open. end of the body portion and a suitable sealing material is employed for-establishing a hermetic seal. The cover is maintained in position by a substantially U-shaped locking band which engages the cover and an outwardly projecting part of the body portion. The ends of the locking bands are connected and are maini .ed in locking position.
i object of the present invention is to proa container of the above type wherein the cover is secured to the body portion by a sealing band having the ends thereof constructed and arranged to provide an easily assembled lockf ing conection which may be easily released to permit removal of the cover from the container.
A further object or the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein one end of the sealing band is provided with a recess 'hin which a proiectionat the opposite end of the sealing band is adapted to fit for providing lfm lng connection, and wherein one end of ing band is extended beyond the lock- 1 -necticn so as to provide a tab portion ich may be pulled outwardly to release the locking connection between the ends ofthe band.
A stili further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein holding lugs adjacent one end of the sealing band are adapted to engage thetab portion to prevent accidental outward movement thereof and to thus maintain the locking connection between the ends of the band, the holding lugs being releasable upon outward movement of theA tab portion to permit release of the locking connection between the ends of the band and subsequent removal of the cover.
rEhe above and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will be hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a top plan View, partly in section, showing the assembled container.
Figure 2 is an enlarged end View of the assembled container, partly in section, showing the manner in which the cover is held on the container and also the locking connection between the ends of the sealing band.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional View taken substantially along the line 3 3 of Figure 2, and showing the locking connection between the ends of the sealing band.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing a modified form of container.
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing a further inodied form of container and sealing band.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, and particularly t0 Figures 1, 2 and 3, the body portion of the container is illustrated as being substantially rectangular in shape and relatively shallow in depth although it is to be clearly understood that the container may be formed in any desired shape. The body portion includes a bottom wall I and an opstanding peripheral body wall ii. The free peripheral edgeoi the body wall Il is turned outwardly and downwardly upon itself, as at l2, and then outwardly, downwardly and inwardly to provide a peripheral bead i3 which terminates in an inwardly directed horizontal shoulder I4.
The cover i5 includes a central depressed portion l having an upwardly extending Vertical wall portion il disposed within the'inner surface of the body wall ii. The vertical wall H is directed 4outwardly to provide a horizontal portion it and this portion i8 is then directed downwardly, as at i9. The free end E@ of the depending portion L? is folded upon itself to strengthen the cover. The vertical wall portions Il, I9 and the horizontal portion iS provide a downwardly open channel within which a suitable sealing material 2i is disposed. The outwardly turned end I2 of the body wall Il is imbedded in the sealing material 2l so that the container can be hermetically sealed.
In order to further maintain the cover in position on the can, there is provided a sealing or locking band 22 which is substantially U-shaped in transverse cross section and thus includes upper and lower horizontal skirt portions or iianges 23, 2li, respectively. When the sealing band is in sealingY position, the flange portion 23 engages the outer surface of the horizontal portion I8 of the cover and the fiange portion 2:1
cngages the outer surface of the shoulder i4 on the body portion of the container. The body of the sealing band thus overlies and encloses the bead iii and the depending outer wall EQ on the cover.
In order to lock the sealing band in position on the container, the ends of the band are provided with interlocking connections and reference is inade particularly to Figures 2 and 3. The end 22a of the band 22 overlies the adjacent end 22h of the band, as shown in Figure 3. The end 22a is provided with an outward projection 25 which forms an internal recess within which an outward projection E@ on the end B2b is adapted to fit or a snap nt may be provided. The skirt or flange portions 23, 2d of the sealing band terminate and abut substantially at the line 2'.' and the end portion 22a is directed outwardly adjacent the opposite end 22h of the band. The end 22a is extended beyond the recessed portion 25 to provide a tab portion 28 which is adapted to normally lie next to the adjacent surface of the band.
The tab portion 28 may be provided with a knul-led finger gripping surface 23a to facilitate manipulation thereof. The tab portion E8 is connected to the end portion of the band by an integral connection which is reduced in width so as to provide upper and lower recessed portions respectively. rlhe inner end 22h of the band is provided with upper and lower holding lugs 3i, respectively, which are directed toward one another and which engage the connecting portion 2Q at the recessed portions Sd, respectively. In this manner, the extended connecting portion 29 of the end 22a is maintained against theinner end portion 22h of the band so as to prevent the locking connection between the recess portion 25 andthe projection 255 from being accidentally released.
When it is desired to remove the band as' to open the container, the tab portion 28a is pulled outwardly and continued movement thereof will force the holding lugs 3l, Sie outwardly in order to permitrelease of the locking connection between the recessed portion 25 and the projection 2G; The band 22 can then be removed so as to permit removal of the cover i from the container.
In the modiied form of the invention shownin Figure e, the body wall lla of the container is turned outwardly and is then directed downwardly to provide a depending skirt portion 32 which has the end thereof turned outwardly and folded upon itself to provide a relatively stiff shoulder portion 33 with which the-bottom flange 34 on the sealing band 35 is adapted to engage. The upper flange 3.3 on the sealing band is adapted to engage the horizontal portion i3d on the cover As described in connection with Figures l, 2 and 3, a sealing material la'is disposed within the channel formed by the peripheral edge of the cover and the upper end of the body wall lio is adapted to be imbedded' ther in so as to seal the container. In Figure 5 of the drawing, the body wall lib of the container is provided with an outwardly directed rib portion 3l which forms a lower l-iorizontall shoulder with which the iiange on the sealing band is adapted to engage. The upper flange 36d on the sealing band 35a is adapted to engage the horizontal portion Edi)- of the cover lh. The body wall i ib is continued above the outward rib 3l and is provided with annwardly turned bead 39 which is adapted to cooperate with the sealing material 2H) to provide an effective seal for the contents of the container.
From the forego-ing description, it will be seen that the present invention provides a highly efficient container wherein the cover is secured thereto by a sealing band. The ends of the sealing band are constructed and arranged so that they may be easily locked in position for closing the container. As illustrated, one end of the band has a recess within which a projection on the opposite end of the band is adapted to t and this locking connection may be in the form of a snap connection, if desired. One end of the band has a pull tab which extends peripherally beyond the locking connection and may be pulled outwardly lso as to release the locking connection. ln order to more effectively maintain the ends of the band in locked position, holding lugs engage the pull tab for maintaining the locking connection in position. Y
It is to be clearly understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
