Description
Jan. 22, 1957 H. B. IQERMER CONTAINER Filed Aug. 29, 1955 l l l/l l I z ATTORNEY United States Patent CONTAINER Herman B. Lermer, South Orange, N. J., assignor to Lermer Plastics Mfg. Co., Garwood, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application August 29, 1955, Serial No. 531,099
3 Claims. (Cl. 220-60) This invention relates to improvement in containers and more particularly to the provision of a container of novel features useful for dispensing of pharmaceutical and medicinal preparations, and other products, the container having a body portion open at the upper end and a positive snap-action closure cap therefor. The body portion and closure cap have complementarily formed registering parts so proportioned that the closure cap may be positioned on the upper end of the body portion and then snapped into therewith, thereupon having interfitting contact therewith.
These and other advantageous objects, which will appear from the drawings and from the description hereinafter, are accomplished by the structure of my invention, of which an embodiment is illustrated in the drawings. It will be apparent, from a consideration of said drawings and the following description, that the invention may be embodied in other forms suggested thereby, and such other forms as come within the scope of the appended claims are to be considered within the scope and purview of the instant invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a container embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, transverse, partly sectional, partly elevational view thereof, taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a further enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the closure cap, initially positioned on the body member prior to assembly thereon, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing the position of the closure cap on the body member at the completion of the closing operation.
As shown in the drawings, the container of this invention comprises a body portion open at its upper end 11 (Fig. 3) and having a rib 12 formed on the outer wall of the body portion and defining, with the upper edge 13 thereof, a shouldered recessed portion 14. The body portion 10 further has a recessed portion 15 in its outer wall beneath the rib 12. A closure cap is provided pursuant to the present invention for cooperation with the rib 12 of the body portion to close the upper end of the body portion. Said cap comprises a cap closure portion 21 and a depending flange 22, preferably of more flexible material than the rib portion of the body portion. An internal rib 23 is formed on the flange 22 and the parts are preferably so proportioned that when the cap is positioned on the body portion (Fig. 3) the internal rib of the flanged portion of the cap first contacts the rib 12 of the body portion and flexes outwardly (arrow A,
Patented Jan. 22, 1957 ICE Fig. 3). The rib 23 of the cap rides along the outer face of the rib 12 and then flexes (Fig. 4) inwardlly in the direction of the arrow B of Fig. 4, and into registering engagement with the lower end 24 of the body portioned rib 12. The internal bead 23 of the flange 22 of the cap is preferably pointed inwardly, terminating in the point 25 directed inwardly of the cap. The cap also has an internal head 26 at the juncture of the top and flanged portions thereof of complementary outlline to the shouldered recess 14 intermediate the upper edge and rib of the body portion, adapted to snap into said recess 14 when the cap is assembled on the body portion (Fig. 4) with a pronounced snap, or click, to provide a double registration of the cap at the upper and lower ends of the body portion rib. Thus, the parts are firmly interlatched and the top of the body portion 10 of the container eifectively closed until such time as it may be desired to open same, whereupon the cap may be readily lifted from the body portion.
The cap may be provided with an external rib 27 in registry with the internal rib 23 of the flanged portions of the cap, to provide further stability to the device in the engaging and disengaging operations above referred to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A container comprising a body portion open at its upper end, a rib formed on the outer wall of the body portion and projecting therefrom adjacent the upper edge of the body portion and defining, with the upper edge thereof, a shouldered recess, said body having a recessed portion at its outer wall beneath the rib, a closure cap for cooperation with the rib of said body portion to close the upper end of the body portion, said cap comprising a top closure portion and a depending flange of more flexi ble material than the rib portion of the body portion, an internal rib formed on the flange of the cap, the parts being so proportioned that when the cap is positioned on the body portion, the internal rib of the flanged portion of the cap will first contact the rib of the body portion and flex outwardly, riding along the outer face thereof and will then snap inwardly and into registering engagement with the lower end of the rib securing the cap on the body portion, said cap having an internal head at the juncture of the top and flange portions thereof of complementary outline to the shouldered recess intermediate the upper edge and rib adapted for registration with and to snap into the recess when the cap is assembled on the body portion, to provide a double registration of the cap at the upper and lower ends of the body portion rib.
2. In a container as set forth in claim 1, said internal rib of the cap being of pointed cross-section, with the point thereof directed inwardly.
3. In a container as set forth in claim 1, said cap having an external rib portion in registry with the internal rib of the flanged portion of the cap.
