To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JESSE ALBERT J ACOB- sQN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in barrels.

The object of my invention is to provide a barrel of asimple, strong, and durable construction, suitable for use as a pork-barrel, in which the head may be quickly and easily secured on or removed from the barrel without the necessity of loosening or removing thehoops and then again tightening the same, as heretofore has been the general practice. This result I accomplish, and herein my invention consists, by providing the barrel with a removable head or cover, which is furnished with a short or stub body adapted to telescope over and embrace the upper end or mouth of the barrel-body and secured thereto by spring locks, catches, or hooks secured to the barrel-body and engaging the hoop on the supplemental short or stub body of the removable head. The upper end of the barrelbody is recessed or tapered to fit the corresponding recess or taper of the short or stub body of the removable head, and a collar or gasket, of paper or other suitable material, is or should be inserted to insure a tight fit between the removable head and the body of the barrel. In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a barrel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail vertical section.

In the drawings, A represents the body of a barrel; B, its hoops; 0, its upper .or removable head, and D the supplemental short or stub body with which the removable head O is provided. The stub-body D is preferably provided with two hoops B B to bind its staves together and to the head 0, and the barrel-body A is. preferably furnished with three hoops B above its bulge or middle.

The barrel-body A is furnished with a series of spring-steel locks, catches, or hooks F, preferably three in number. These locks F are inserted under the hoops B, encircling the barrel-body, so that the tightening of the hoops on the barrel-body will firmly secure the locks in place thereon, thus rendering other fastening unnecessary. The lip or projection f of the lock F engages the lowermost hoop' B on the short or stub body D of the removable head C when the removable head is forced home or to place on the barrel, thus firmly and rigidly securing theremovable head to the barrel. To give the looks F a better hold upon or engagement with the hoop on the removable head, the stub-bodyD is preferably furnished with external recesses or notches d, adapted to register with the locks F. To insure a tight fit between the externally recessed or tapering portion a; of the barrel-body and the internally recessed or tapering portion at of the stub-body D, a collar or gasket G, of paper or other suitable material, should be insertedbefore the removable head is forced upon the barrel.

To head my barrelafter it has been filled,

all that is required to be done is simply to place the removable head in position on top of the barrel and then forcibly press it home thereon, when the spring-hooks F will automatically snap over the lowermost hoop B on the removable head, and thus lock the head firmly in place on the barrel.

To open the barrel or remove the head therefrom, all that is required is to force the spring-locks F outward until these looks are disengaged from the removable head,and then the head may be lifted off or removed.

As illustrated in the drawings, I have shown the barrel as being provided with only one removable head; but, if desired, both of its heads may be made removable or of the sam construction as the upper one.

The hoops which encircle the wooden staves of the barrel and of the removable head are preferably metal ones.

The staves for the short or supplemental body D of the removable head 0 may be made from the stubs of the stave-blanks used in making the staves of the barrel.

By my invention, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, I am enabled to remove and replace the heads in barrels or tierces very quickly and easily and Without danger of destroying or injuring either the head or the chime and without the labor and expenseincident to sending the barrels or tierces to the cooper-shop. With the barrels or tierces heretofore in use to remove the head it has been necessary to first knock loose the four hoops at the upper end of the barrel, much to the injury of the hoops and barrel, and then insert an iron instrument between the head and chime and pry the head out, which operation frequently destroys or injures either the head or chime, or both, and the barrel after being thus opened and emptied requires to be sent to the cooper to be recoopered. The rough usage the barrels and tierces get in opening them in this old way and at the hands of the cooper in the recoopering operation soon wears the outside shoulder off of the chime, and in prying the heads out and putting them back pieces are frequently broken off the heads, thus very often requiring new heads to be supplied and nearly always requiring more or less patching of the head. Frequently, too, in the old barrels in prying out the head a stave is broken off and the barrel thus ruined. All these difficulties heretofore experienced in the practical operation of barrels and tierces now generally in use in packing-houses are entirely obviated by my invention and much time, labor, and expense saved.

I clairn 1. In a barrel, the combination of a barrelbody with a short or stub body telescoping with the upper end of the barrel-body, the barrel-body and the stub-body being each composed of staves and each being provided with one or more encircling hoops, and the meeting ends of the barrel-body and stubbody having tapering or wedging surfaces or portions lapping each other, substantially as specified.

2. In a barrel, the combination of a barrelbody composed of staves and provided with encircling hoops with a removable short or stub body composed of staves and provided with one or more encircling hoops, the meeting ends of the barrel-body and stub-body having tapering or wedging surfaces lapping each other and spring looks or catches for securing the removable stub-body on the barrel-body, said stub-body and barrel-body each having heads, substantially as specified.

3. In a barrel the combination of the main barrel-body composed of staves having tapering or wedging ends and provided with encircling hoops with a remo vable. short or stub body composed of staves having tapering or wedging lower ends fitting and lapping the tapering ends of said main barrel-body staves and provided with one or more encircling hoops and a head, and a collar or gasket between the removable stub-body and said main barrel-body at their lapping or telescoping portions, substantially as specified.

4. In a barrel, the combination of abarrelbody with a removable head furnished with a short ,or stub body telescoping with the upper end of the barrel-body, and spring looks or catches secured to the barrel-body and engaging a hook on the stub-body of the removable head, for relnovably securing the parts together, and a collar or gasket between the removable head and the barrel-body, substantially as specified.

5. The combination with a barrel-body A furnished with an externally recessed or tapered portion a, of a removable head 0 having a short or stub body D provided with an internally recessed or tapered portion d, hoops B encircling said bodies A and D, and springlocks F secured to said body Aby the hoops encircling the same, and engaging one of the hoops on said stub-body D, substantially as specified.
