Description
A. SHENFIELD.
SUSPENDERS.
No. 191,185. Patented May 22,1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ABRAHAM SHENFIELD, OF NEw YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUSPENDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,185, dated May 22, 1877 application filed April 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, ABRAHAM SHENFIELD, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification Suspenders have been made with leather ends, having button-holes in them, said ends being attached to the rings or loops of the clasp or buckle, by passing such end through the loop or ring and sewing the upper end of the leather at the back of the suspender-end. Suspender-ends that are made of woven material are similarly attached by being passed through the ring or loop and sewed.
In Letters Patent No. 169,855, granted to me, a leather head is employed to connect the braided Suspender-ends to the ring or loop of the clasp or buckle.
Leather ends have been received within a folded head of sheet metal, and secured by an eyelet.
My present invention consists in the suspender-ends formed of a separate and independent woven webb, having a button-hole near one end, and connected at the other end by a folded piece of leather or similar material to the loop or ring of the buckle, and thereby the attachment at the upper part of the suspender-end is very strong and independent of the adjacent suspender-end, so that any injury to the attachment of one suspender-end does not affect the other suspender-end, as is the case where the two ends are formed of one folded strap.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents, by an elevation, the improved suspender-end; and
Fig. 2 shows a section of the folded headpiece at the line w w.
The ring or loop a of the buckle or slide is to be of any desired kind, and the webbing forming the suspender-ends b is woven and provided with the button-hole, as at 0.
Instead of the upper part of the suspenderend passing through the ring or loop a and being sewed, I make use of the folded headpiece (1, of leather or similar material, that passes down at each side of the webbing b, and the parts are sewed firmly together.
By this construction the head-piece is much stronger, and the webbing more firmly held. than in the suspenders heretofore made.
It is generally preferable to use a double or bifurcated head-piece, so that the respective Suspender-ends may be attached directly to the head-piece, but they will be independent of each other, so that the head-piece could be separated at the dotted line a, if desired, without injuring the attachment.
I claim as my invention- Thesuspender-end formed of two separate and independent woven webs, each having a button-hole near one end, and connected at the other end by a folded piece of leather to the loop or ring of the buckle, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 10th day of April, A. D. A
. ABRAHAM SHEN FIE LD.
I Witnesses:
GEo. T. PINCKNEY, CHAs. H. SMITH.
