A. E. SMITH COMBINED RACK AND UTILITY TABLE Filed Jan. 28, 1932 l I II I I.
Patented Mar. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES" ALYsoN E. SMITH, or OGDEN, UTAH COMBINED RACK ANDUTILITY, TABLE Application filed January 28, 1932. Serial No. 589,467.
This invention relates to an article of furni ture andit generally aims to prov de a combined rack for books, magazines or the like- The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an 7 operative embodiment.
In said drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in normal condition forming a rack,
on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2 but showing the parts in position constituting a table.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the article of furniture has upright end members 10, a bottom ll'connecting the same and side panels 12 extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom. Central panels 13 rise from the bottom 11 and are in spaced relation to provide a pocket 14 between the same. The walls or panels 11, 12 and 13 coact to form pockets or racks or spaces at 15 for books, magazines or any desired purpose;-
Said panel 13 extends above the panel 12 so as to accommodate table leaves 16 which are hinged together at 17, within the space 14, when in folded condition, the same resting on a false bottom 18 therein; Said leaves 16' have manipulating lugs orspins 19 thereon. Such pins when the leaves 16 are infolded and concealed position as shown in Figure 2 extending above or in openings 20 of the panel 13.
spaces or pockets 15 reason of bottom panels '22 and inclined side panels 23, con-- nected to the end members 10., In the'unfolded condition of the leaves 16, they'are supported partlyon top of the panels 13 and also on the top of the panel 23, the latter'having projectionsat 24 which extend into slots 25 in the'under surfaces of the leaves. Such leaves are also located between the upper ends of the end members 10 to further aid in mainso taining the leaves in place. It is obvious that the rack spaces 15 and 21 maybe used for any desired purposes and that a single rack maybe employed as well as a plurality.
' Various changes may be resorted to provided they fallwithin the spirit andscope of the invention.
Iclaim as my invention:
. 1. A device of the class described having i a rack including a plurality of spaced panels providing pockets, and a table top prov vided with means to interfit with said panels so as to be supported and secured against 2. A device of the class described having a rack including a plurality of spaced panels providing pockets, a table topprovided with means to interfit with said panels so asto:
be supported and secured against accidentalao displacement thereon, means adjacent, one
of said panels providing aspace for reception of the top when not in use. p 1 3. A device of theclass described having I panels providing aspace therebetween, ass
foldable table top disposable in said space, means on opposite sides of said panels in-. cluding second panels, said first and second panels serving tosupport the top when ex-.
- ten'ded, and said top and one'of said panels being'in interfitted relation in the latter po- 5 sitio r I a l. A device of the class described comprising end members, panels between the same having a space therebetween, panels on op-" posite sides of the first mentioned panel and coacting therewithto form racks, a table top comprising flexibly connected sections, f said top being normally disposed in said,
space, said topbeingdisposable in extended loo condition across the top of said panels for support thereon, and the second mentioned 1 panel having interfitting engagement at the upper end thereon with said top,rand said end members extending above the lower edge of the table top in its extended position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature;
