UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. HARWOOD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
' IMPROVEMENT lN TALKING AND CRVING DOLLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,935, dated April 24, 1877; application filed February 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HARWOOD, of Brooklyn, in the county of 'Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Talking and Crying Doll, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of a doll-body, having my improvement attached. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the sound-producing device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a sound-producing attachment to be applied to the bodies of dolls, which may be blown by the mouth to imitate vocal sounds.
Talking or crying dolls, as ordinarily made, are provided with bellows and other working parts, which complicate them and increase the expense of manufacture and liability to get out of repair. To obviate these difficulties my present improvement is devised.
Referring to the drawing, B is a reed mouthpiece, which may be of any construction; but the preferred form, which is shown in the drawing, consists of a short flanged tube, a, having an internal tube, a, to which a reed, c, is attached. The reed, thus inclosed, is protected fromlinjury, and the flange of the tube a serves as a means of retaining the mouthpiece in place upon the doll. The under surface of the flange is provided with lugs d, which are made either with or without the points b.
When the reed is attached to the doll in the process of manufacture the points are unnecessary; but when it is applied to a dollbody, already completed, the. points are inserted into the cloth covering of the body, and bent down or clinched by means of a tool specially adapted to the purpose.
When the reed is applied to a doll in process of manufacture a hole is made through the cloth of the body at the point at which it is desired to 10 ate the reed, and the tube a is inserted from within, having the mouth-piece projecting outward, while the flange is retained by the cloth. To prevent the material used in filling the doll-body from entering the tube, and interfering with the action of the reed, or with the emergence of the sound, a piece, 0, of heavy paper, or thin pasteboard, is placed against the flanged end of the tube, or against the lugs formed thereon.
The doll, when held in the position in which a child is held while being tended or hushed from crying, is placed convenientlyfor the application of the lips to the mouth of the tube a, when by blowing on the tube, and, at the same time, articulating with the lips and tongue, a sound may be made which will simulate the voice of a child when saying papa or mama, or when crying.
I do not limit or confine my improvement to any particular form of sound-producing device, as reeds may be arranged in various ways, and whistles also may be employed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A tube containing a reed, and having a flanged endprovided with lugs, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A tube containing a reed, and having a flanged end provided with lugs, and also with points for attaching the same to the dollbody, substantially as herein shown and described.
WM. A. HARWOOD. Witnesses:
