SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,660, dated November 5, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LWILLIAM SELLEEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the countyof Essex and State of Massachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Campaign Horns, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a campaign horn that can be opera-ted by hand so as to produce long or short intermittent sounds.

The invention consists of a horn to the out-- side of which is secured a metal cylinder that extends just over the reed or mouthpiece and an-outer cylinder 0t larger diameter, in which the cylinder on the horn works, said cylinder being closed at one end and at the other end provided with an elastic ring that fits around the cylinder on the horn, as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a campaign horn, embodying my invention, when closed up. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same, the horn being partly extended. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the horn removed from the outer cylinder. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the outer cylinder. Fig. 5 is a view of the elastic ring.

A represents the horn, to which is secured a cylinder 13, which extends over and protects the reed or mouth-piece a.

O is an outer cylinder, closed at one end, and to its open end is secured a ring D, of rubber or other suitable material. This ring is simply a flat circular piece of material with a hole d in the center, as shown in Fig. 5, and in applying it to the cylinder C its outer edge is passed over the end of the cylinder and secured thereon by a cord or wired. The end of the cylinder B is forced through the opening d in the ring D, which ring then hugs the cylinder B, so as to be air-tight.

To operate the horn, thehorn A is held in one hand and the cylinder C in the other, and by drawing the cylinder I; partly out of the cylinder 0 and then forcing it back the air in the cylinder 0 is compressed and forced out through the reed or mouthpiece a, thereby producing a sound. The horn A, with its cylinder B, can be drawn entirely out of the cylinder C, and the horn can then, if desired, be blown by the mouth.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A campaign horn consisting of a horn having a cylinder secured thereto and an outer cylinder closed at one end and its open end having a ring of rubber or other suitable material secured thereto, the inner edge of which ring hugs the inner cylinder, thereby making an air-tight joint between thetwo cylinders, substantially as shown and described.

2. The horn A, having the cylinder 13 secured thereto, and the cylinder C, closed at one end, in combination with the ring D, of rubber or other suitable material, secured at its outer edge to the top of the cylinder 0, and its inner edge embracing the cylinder 15 and forming an air-tight joint between the two cylinders, substantially as shown and described.

8. The fiat ring D, of rubber or other suit able material, in combination with a horn having a cylinder attached thereto and free to slide in an outer cylinder, the said ring bein g secured to the outer cylinder and its inner edge fitting closely around the inner cylinder to form an air-tight joint, substantially as shown and described.
