IMPROVEMENT IN lRONlNG-BOARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,623, dated April 17, 1877 application filed December 22, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD W. HAR- GRAVE, of the city of Marshalltown, county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards 5 and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view of my said board as attached to the table, shelf, window-ledge, or other object supporting the same. Fig. 2 is a view of the clamp on the upper end of the leg, together with the casting which attaches it to the leg, the stirrup which attaches the leg and its attachments to the board, and the brace that sustains the outer end of the board by connecting it with the leg.

This invention relates to the manner of fastening an ironing-board to a table or other supporting object by means of a self-adjusting clamp, and firmly supporting the same during the process of ironing; also, to the convenient folding the same up into a small compass when not in use, and consists of the clamp B O, which not only serves to fasten the ironing-board A to the table, but is also a stand upon which to place a flat-iron while ironing, and is fastened to the leg F, turned edgewise for the purpose of giving greater strength and stiffness, against which is pressed the slotted brace G by means of 1 the thumb-nut and bolt H, which brace supports the board A, to which it is connected by means of a screw.

In the drawings, A represents the ironingboard, with one end resting against the under side of the table or shelf, the middle resting upon the slotted brace G, the outer end free to be used as a shirt-board, a skirt-board, an ironing-board, or cutting-out board. B represents the clamp, which rests upon the table, and G that part of the clamp which passes through and under the board A, and which is flanged so as to receive the leg F. D represents the stirrup which connects the casting B G with the board A by means of woodscrews. E represents the slot through which .the stirrup D passes, and which permits the casting B O, with the leg attached, to move backward and forward in such a manner that B may be drawn backward and over the board A into the proper position to clamp the edge of the table, or shoved forward so that B may clear the end of A for the purpose of folding the board and leg together. F represents the leg of the table, turned edgewise toward the floor, its upper end between the flanges of B O, to which it is fastened by means of the screws 41 '5 1;. G represents a slotted iron or wooden brace, which is attached to a block on the under side of A by means of a screw, and

which supports and gives firmness to A by resting against the leg F, to which it is secured by means of abolt passing through the slot and theleg F, upon which is a thumb-nut which firmly presses F and G together. H represents the bolt which passes through the slot in G and a hole in F, upon which a thumb-nut operates, as above described.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the clamp B O, having the slot E and the stirrup D, constructed substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the said clamping device, consisting of the clamp, slot, and stirrup, with the leg F and slotted brace G, substantially as and for purposes set forth.
