Description

PATENT PETER W. RALFS, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-MIRRORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,139. dated April 3, i877; application filed February 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER W. RALFs, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Detecters, of which the following is a specilication:
My invention has for its object the detection of anything that :nay be taking place in the street, or anywhere on either side ot' a house on the side of which it may be placed. It is a box or frame secured to the side of a house, with looking-glasses in it, with a screw, for the purpose ot' adjustment of the glasses,
so that they' may be arranged at the proper angle, so that a person can, by lookingin one of the glasses, see everything that is transacted within range.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View of same.
A is the box or frame in which the lookingglasses are placed B B, the looking-glasses; C, the frames of the glasses; D D, arms, secured to the looking-glasses, with ears'E on the looking-glass frames, to which they are attached; F, a nut, to which the arms are at' tached at the other end of saine, and through which passes a shaft, G, with a screw on same, which, by turning, either screws up or down the nut F. His a handle or knob on the shaft G, with which to turn the same; I, a keeper, on the back end of the box or traine, into which the end of shaft G works, said shaft Gr being' provided with a head which holds it firmly in its socket. As the handle H is turned the nut F is screwed in either direction, and the arms D are either straightened out or closed up, so that the glasses may be adjusted to the desired angle. K l are openings or slots in the box, so that, should the glasses be broken, the end of' the glassframe may be removed and another glass be inserted through the slot. L vL are pivots, securing the ends ot' the glasses, so that they may be turned on same. V
The-operation ot' this detecter is as follows: lt is secured to the window-sill on the outside of' a house, with the handle H passing through the sash; by turning the handle the glasses can be so adjusted that a person sit-ting on the inside of the window, by lookingI in either of the glasses can see whatever is taking place within range of the respective glasses.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Box or frame A, looking-glasses B B, with arms D D, screwshaft Gr, and nut F, substantially as described.
2. Arms D D, screw-shaft G. nut F, handle H, keeper I, and looking-glasses B B, all in combination, substantially as described.
PETER W. RALFS.
