JAMES ROACHE AND WILLIAM F. REDDING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS' TO SAID REDDING.
IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part or Letters Patent No. 189,060, dated April 3182'7; application iiled January 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES E. ROAGHE and WM. F. REDDIlyG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Im provement'in Rotary Slate-Pen cil Sharpeners; and we do hereby declare in what manner the same is to be constructed, arranged, and operated, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification.
To enable those who are` skilled in the rnechanic arts to make and operate the same', we will describe it as follows, to wit:
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
A is the cylindrical shell. B is the base to which the wiper, made of any suitable material, is attached. Gis the revolving pencilholder. D is the sanded or emery surface for sharpening the pencil. E is the pin or stem upon which the pencil-holder revolves, and carries the point thereof around upon the surface D, when operated by the hand while in the position shown at Fig. 1.
We will now describe the inode of operating our said invention: Hold the wooden cylinder A firmly in the left hand, and with the right hand place the point of the pencil to be sharpened between the limbs of the revolving holder 0; then grasp the body of the pencil firmly with the right hand, and revolve the same so that the point will rub against the internal outwardly-flaring sanded surfacel of the shell A, and thus produce the desired point.
The wiper, attached to base B, is used the same as an ordinary sponge or cloth, the wooden shell A serving as the handle thereof.
After thus describing the several parts of our invention, we would here state that its novelty consists in the combination of the cylinderA with the internal sanded surface D, and pencil-holder G and pin E, for the purpose set forth.
What we claim asl novel and useful, and wish to protect' by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A pencil-Sharpener, consisting of a cylindrical shell, A,the inner wall of which is coated with sand or emery, and flaring outward from its base, in combination with the revolving holder G, operated substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto subscribe our names in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES E. ROAUHE. WILLIAM F. REDDING.
