PENClL-SHARPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,497, dated March 3, 1896. Application filed July 18,1895. Serial No. 556,312. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. CHEVRIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to pencil-sharpeners, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive and which is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pencil-sharpener; Fig. 2, a-longitudinal central section thereof, showing also a pencil in position to be sharpened; and Fig. 3, a plan view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I employ a cylindrical cup-shaped receptacle A, which is closed at one end, B, and open at the other end, 0, and the interior thereof is provided with a lining D of sandpaper, or a similar substance, which is adapted to cut away or sharpen the point of a pencil when operated upon as hereinafter described. The open end 0 is provided with an annular outwardlydirected flange or rim E, and around the receptacle A is passed a ring F, one side of which is provided with or has secured thereto a curved arm G, provided at its free end with a tubular head H, through which a pencil K may be inserted.
The ring F is revoluble, and in operation the pencil is inserted through the tubular head H, and the receptacle A is held in one hand and the pencil carried around the interior walls of the receptacle in such manner, and while being held in such position, that the inclined surface L at the point thereof will come in contact with the inner surface B, as will be readily understood, and in this operation the pencil may be revolved in the head H as the ring is carried around, and the pencil may also be held in such position as is best adapted to accomplish the sharpening of the point thereof.
As will be understood, my invention is not limited to the form, construction, and combi nation of the separate elements as shown and described, nor to the material used as a lining for the receptacle A, as it is evident that changes in and modifications of these elements, their form, construction and arrangement, and the material of which they are composed may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A pencilsharpener, consisting of a cylindrical receptacle, one end of which is open, and which is provided with a lining of sand paper or similar material, and means for holding a pencil connected therewith so that the same may be revolved around the interior of the receptacle and the point thereof sharpened, consisting of a ring revolubly mounted on the receptacle and having an arm provided with a tubular head through which the penoil may be inserted, substantially as shown and described.
2. A pencil-sharpener, consisting of a receptacle open at one end, and closed at the other, and provided with a surface which is adapted to sharpen a pencil, the open end of the receptacle being provided with an annular flange and a revoluble ring mounted on said receptacle, back of said flange, and provided with a curved arm having at its free end a tubular head, which is adapted to receive a pencil, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of July, 1895.
ROBERT S. CHEVRIER.
