Description
(No Model.)
0. SNEIDER. Combinatmn Pencil Holder. No. 235,307.
Patented Dec. 7, I880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SNEIDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO DANIEL SLOTE AND GEORGE FREEMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINATION PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,307, dated December '7, 1880.
Application filed September 27, 1880.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES ,SNEIDER, of New York, in the county of New York, and in the State of New York, have invented cerrain new and useful Improvements in Combination Pencil-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the IO letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention has forits objects to provide. a device that will form a protection to the point of the pencil, and by means of which I 5 the pencil can be accurately centered to subject it to the action of a sharpener forming part of the device, whereby the point will be uniformly cut, as more fully hereinafter specified.
These objects I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved device complete and attached to a pencil. I Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my device, and Fig.3 a transverse section on the line 00 00 of Fig. 2.
The letterA indicates the sharpening device, which consists of a cutter-head having a conical recess, a, for the end of the pencil, 0 and provided with a spiral slot, b, for the escape of shavings, and a longitudinal central opening, a, in which the lead is adapted to rotate as the pencil is turned, to prevent injury to said lead as the wood is cut away. 3 5 The said head is inclosed in a tube, B, having a spiral slot corresponding to the spiral slot in the cutter-head, the said head being provided with the knife A.
The letter E indicates a tube, slotted for a portion of its length, as indicated by the letter 6, the slot terminating ina circular enlargement, 6 to prevent the splitting of the (No model.)
tube when sprung upon the pencil. The said tube is provided with a bead, d, and a shoulder, 6, about midway between its two ends, the 5 upperend extending into the lower end of the tube B, the two being beaded together, as indicated by the letter g, in such manner that while the tube Bis free to turn upon the tube E it cannot slip off longitudinally. o
The upper end of the tube B may be provided with a rubber plug, 0, for erasing pencilmarks, and the contiguous outside portions of the two tubes may be provided with an adjustable calendar, as indicated in Fig.1 of the drawings, one tube being provided with numbers from 1 to 31, indicating the days of the month, and the other with the initial letters indicating the days of the Week, so arranged that the parts may be set, relatively to each other, as in the ordinary rotary calendar.
' As thus constructed it will be seen that the pencil will be grasped securely by the tube E, and be truly centered to the cutter-headin the tube B, which can be rotated on the tube E in order to sharpen the pencil.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the tube B, carrying the sharpening device A, the tube E, on which the said tube B is mounted and adapted to rotate, the said tube E being adapted to receive a pencil, whereby the same may be held and accurately centered to the sharpener, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of September, 1880.
CHAS. SNEIDER.
