Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. MAGNORIUS, a citizen of Russia, residing at Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha, State ofWisconsin, have invented certain new and useful AImprovemefnts in Pencil and Pen Holders; and"` I do hereby declare the following to beY a-4 full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to pencil and pen holders.

The object of the invention is to provide a carrier for pencils and pen holders and also for pen points which embodies an improved compact structure which will thoroughly protect the article, prevent movement of the article relatively to the holder and from which the article can be removed with ease and facility.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed outV in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in Which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the 1nvention;

Fig. 6, a section on the line 6- 6 of Fig. Referring to the drawings the invention 1s shown as comprising a tubular body portion 10 having mounted therein adjacent one end a rubber plug 11 and adjacent its other end a rubber plug 12. The plug 11 is provided with a plurality of longitudinal openings 13 through which are detachably engaged the pencil and pen holders it is desired to carry in the device. The rubber plug 12 is provided with a plurality of arcuate slits 14 in Which are adapted to be removably engaged desired pen points. Engaged on the body portion 10 is an ornamental tubular member 15 of less length than the body portion and having its ends spaced from respective ends of the body portion l; The end of the Fig. 5, a section on the line -5 of Fig. 2,`

Disposed within the tubular member 19 is a casing 20 in which is rotatably mounted a longitudinal shaft 21 having fixed thereon a pinion 22 and a balance Wheel 23. The inner end of the casing is provided with an opening 24 and the end of the shaft 21 adjacent this opening carries a head 25 upon which latter is mounted knives 26 diverging in the direction of the opening 24. It will thus be obvious that the knives 26 are so disposed that when a pencil is inserted through the opening 24 and the shaft 21 rotated said knives will act upon the pencil to reffect the sharpening thereof. Mounted in the casing 20 is a bracket 27 in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 28 disposed at right angles to the shaft 21. Fixed upon this shaft is a pinion 29 and a crown gear 30, the latter meshing with the pinion 22. Also mounted in the casing 20 is a bracket 31 in which is rotatably mounted a shaft 32 parallel to the shaft 28. Fixed on this shaft is a gear 33 which meshes With the pinion 29. Encircling the shaft 32 is a spiral spring 34 one end of which is secured to the shaft 32 and the other end to thecasing 20. One end of the shaft 32 is squared to receive a key 35 for the purpose of winding the spring 34. It will be noted that the gear 33 has a ratchet connection With theshaft 32 so that said shaft during the winding of the spring can turn independently of said gear. The gear 30 carries a plurality of circumferentially arrangedjpins 36 extending toward the pinion 29 and between Which a locking pawl 37 is adapted to engage to hold the gear against rotation under the inliuence of the spring 34 as will be obvious. This pawl 37 is pivotally mounted on a bracket 38 within the casing 2O and a portion of the pawl extends through an opening 39 in said casing and an opening 40 in the member 19, whereby the pawl may be manually engaged to move saine to released position with respect to the gear 30. It will be obvious that if a pencil is inserted through the opening 24 and the pawl 37 released the shaft 21 will.

lhat is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a tubular body, rubber plugs mounted in said body adjacent both ends thereof, one of said plugs having openings through which articles are adapted to be forced, said openings being suiiiciently restricted in diameter to frictionally hold the article against movement relatively7 to the plug, and the other plug having slits therein adapted to receive pen points and reacting on the points to clamp the same, and a removable cap on either end of the body.
