2 Claims. (ci. 224-45) This invention relates to a carrier for golf balls. f More particularly, the invention has reference to a carrier of the type stated that is adapted to hold a plurality of golf balls while being particularly adapted for insertion in a golf bag.

Important objects of the invention are as follows:

First, the provision of a golf ball carrier which will be of elongated, stick-like configuration, thus to take up little or no more space within a golf bag than a golf club;

Second, the provision of a carrier which will meet the first object stated above, and which will at the same time hold a substantial number of golf balls;

Third, the provision of a carrier for golf balls so formed as to hold the balls in a manner that will permit one to select any ball desired and remove the same with ease and speed, without disturbing the remaining balls;

Fourth, the provision of a carrier which, when inserted in a golf bag, can be positioned loosely therein, in the same manner as a golf club, and when so positioned, will have one of its ends disposed at or adjacent the mouth of the bag where it will be conveniently accessible to one desiring to remove the carrier from the bag; and

Fifth, the provision of a golf ball carrier that will be inexpensive, durable, and without moving parts.

Other objects will appear from the following description, the claims appended thereto, and from the annexed drawing, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a golf ball carrier formed in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view;

Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the carrier taken at one of its ends;

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view, on the scale of Figure 3, taken on line 4 4 of Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view on line 5 5 of Figure 3.

A fully assembled golf ball carrier constructed according to the present invention is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and as will be noted from these figures, the carrier includes a pair of handles 10, one of the handles being disposed at each end of the device. The handles are of identical, though opposite, construction, each handle including a relatively elongated, tapered medial portion formed integrally at its outer end with a rounded knob 12. At its other end, each handle has a cylindrical inner end portion, reduced in diameter a substantial distance inwardly of its inner terminus to define an axial projection 16 of circular cross-sectional configuration, said projection having at its base an annular shoulder 18.

Extending between the respective handles 10 is an elongated body portion formed from a single piece of resilient sheet metal material fashioned to a trough shape from end to end thereof, said body portion being of arcuate cross section as shown in either Figure 4 or Figure 5. The wall of the body portion, in this connection, is curved transversely to accommodate the same closely to the globular shape of a golf ball B, a number of which 2,721,682 Patented Oct. 25, 1955 can be supported at one time in the trough of the body portion. It is important to note, however, that said wall of the body portion extends through approximately 270 degrees of a circle, being extended through at least more than degrees, but preferably not through so much of a circle as would make diicult the insertion or removal of the golf balls.

Referring to Figures 4 or 5, the opposite, parallel, longitudinal edges of the lbody portion are rolled outwardly throughout their lengths to form flanges 22, the purpose of said flanges being to permit the insertion or removal of golf balls without resistance being offered by the edges to passage of the golf balls, and without damage to or cutting of the golf ball covers.

The opposite ends of the body portion 20 are formed open, and are slipped over the axial projections 16 into engagement with the shoulders 18. A plurality of screws or equivalent fastening elements 24, spaced circumferentially of the body portion and its associated axial projections 16, are then employed for the purpose of fixedly connecting the ends of the body portion to the axial projections, in coaxial alinement with the respective handles 10 The body portion is formed of a springable metal material, so as to permit spreading apart of the longitudinal edges of the body portion a distance suicient to permit one or more golf balls B to be inserted in or removed from the trough of the body portion. Once they are inserted, the several golf balls will be securely retained within the body portion, and will not drop out accidentally, since the springable material of which the body portion is formed will cause the longitudinal edges thereof to grip the balls securely. Of course, whenever a golf ball is to be removed, any ball may be selected by the player and may be simply grasped and pulled outwardly of the trough, the longitudinal edges of the body portion yielding suiciently to permit the ball to be removed.

It is also considered to be an important characteristic of the invention that the device can be loosely positioned, with either of its ends up, within a golf bag, so as to be conveniently accessible, the carrier, when so positioned, being disposed longitudinally of the bag and taking up little more space than one of the golf clubs.

It will be understood that the carrier can be made to fit any golf bag.

It is believed apparent that the invention is not necessarily confined to the specific use or uses thereof described above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended to be illustrative of the principles of operation and the means presently devised to carry out said principles, it being considered that the invention comprehends any minor change in construction that may be permitted within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

l. A golf ball carrier comprising an elongated, straight body portion formed of a resilient sheet material curved transversely to complement the globular shape of a golf ball, said body portion being formed open at its opposite ends and having its respective longitudinal edges spaced apart transversely of the body portion to form a longitudinal trough adapted to receive a plurality of golf balls, said edges being resiliently spreadable for insertion and removal of golf balls, and being rolled outwardly for their full lengths to provide protective headings adapted for facilitating insertion and removal of golf balls without damage to the covers thereof; and a pair of identically though oppositely formed handles aligned longitudinally with the body portion and extending outwardly from the opposite ends of the body portion, said E3 handles beingy elongatedto provide gripping handles at opposite. endsY oi thebody portion and havingaxial projections at their inner ends extending into the respective ends of the body portion, said ends of the body portion being xedly secured to and being closed by theV axial projections of the handles.

2. A golf ball carrier comprising an elongated, straight body portion formed of a resilient sheet material curved transversely tocornplernent the globularA shape of a golf ball, said body portion being formed open at its opposite ends and having its respective longitudinal edges spaced apart transversely of the body portion to form a longitudinal trough adapted to'receive a plurality of golf balls, said edges being resiliently spreadable for insertion and removal of golf balls; and a pair of identically though oppositely formed handles aligned longitudinally with the body portion and extending outwardly from the opposite ends of the body portion, said handles being elongated to provide gripping handles at opposite ends of the body portion, and having axial projections at their inner ends extending into the respective ends of the body portion,

the handles being formed with circumferential shoulders intermediate their ends,V said shoulders forming, abutments at one end of the axial projections limiting movement of the axial projections into the ends of the body portion, said ends of the body portion engaging against said abutments and being closed by the axial projections, the handles including means spaced circumferentially about the axial projections and projecting radially and inwardly through said projections into the projections and the associated ends of the body portion, to xedly connect the body portion to the handles.
