DAVID PAUL CERA, OF HIGHLAND PARK, ILLINOIS.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Application filed July 17, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID PAUL CERA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland Park, in the county of Lake, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil- Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pencil sharpeners and especially to that class of sharpeners in which the pencil is sharpened by a scissors motion of the blade.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a pencil sharpening device which is adapted to be secured to one of the blades of a pair of scissors whereby a pencil may be positioned in the device and sharpened by a reciprocating motion of the scissors blade.
A further object is to improve the general efficiency and simplify the structure of devices of this character. I
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination, formation and arrangements of parts to be more fully hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the device attached to a pair of scissors and holding a pencil. Fig. 2 is an end view of what is shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and, Fig. 4 is a plan View of the blank from which the body of the device is formed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein is shown the preferred form of the invention, 5 and 6 designate respectively the blades of a pair of scissors which are associated with the improved device, which is designated as a whole by the numeral 7. The blades of these scissors are preferably stubby as shown, so that they may be carried in the pocket.
The device 7 is formed from a single blank of metal and curved at its upper end Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
Serial No. 779,613.
to provide the pencil holding portion 8 carrying the spring fingers 9 which are adapted to engage the periphery of the pencil firmly enough to hold the same in relation, but so as to permit rotation of the pencil. The lower end of the device is provided with an extension 10 which has one side bent back on the line 11 onto the major portion. The lower end of the extension is then bent back on the line 12 onto the upper portion and a flap 13 on the body portion is bent over the upbent end of the extension to hold the same in place. For receiving the blade 5 of the scissors a. slot l4= is formed in said end. The pencil holdlng portion is cut away at an angle as at 15 to expose part of the lower end of the pencil and the blade 6 of the scissors slides against the said cutaway portion to cut the pencil. It will be noted that this blade 6 of the scissors is preferably formed with a knife edge and it will be further noted that as the blade 5 is firmly secured in the slot 14: by its insertion therein, the blade 6 of the scissors is permitted no lateral movement'upon the scissors bolt coming loose.
The operation of the device is as follows: One hand of the operator grasps the scissors in the usual manner. lVith the other hand the pencil is inserted in the holding portion. The blade 6 of the scissors is then reciprocated and the pencil is rotated in the holder and forced inwardly as necessary.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and compact device has been provided, which possesses full ease and efliciency of operation.
What is claimed is A pencil sharpening device comprising a cylindrical sleeve cut away at one portion thereofat an angle to the axis of the sleeve to expose a portion of a pencil, and provided with a slot transversely therethrough in advance of said cutaway portion and substantially parallel to said cutaway surface, said slot receiving one blade of a pair of scissors and the other blade of the scissors operating in conjunction with the first blade along said cutaway surface;
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID PAUL CERA.
