Description
A. A. GOWING. MANIOURING IMPLEMENT. APPLICATION nub 00 25, 1909.
982,201 Patented Jan.'17, 1911,
To all whom it may concern:
UNI STAB ALBERT A. GOWING, OF WATKINS, NEW YORK.
MANICURING IMPLEMENT.
esaeoi.
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. Gowmo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watkins, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manicuring Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in manicure implements; and my object is to provide a small, compact, and inexpensive manicure implement which embodies in one structure a plurality of tools.
A further object is to provide a manicure implement of this character adapted to be attached to a variety of objects; and which, while compact, and not liable to interfere with the convenient use or carrying of said object, will efficiently perform the desired functions.
I attain my objects by constructing the implement in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 presents a perspective view of my device in closed position; Fig. 2, a similar view, the device being in open position; Fig. 3, a separate view of my improved nail trimming, scraping and filing device; Fig. 4, a plan view of said latter device before being bent into shape; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of a modified form of said device.
Like reference letters designate corresponding parts in the several views.
The letter A designates one, and the letter B the other, of the handle portions of the device, the member A being provided with upstanding flanges C, which form an inclosing box for the member B, which is received therein. The member B, as is shown in Fig. 2, is provided with upstanding flanges D, corresponding to the flanges C on the member A. It is also provided with end flanges E, the portion included between said flanges D and E thus forming a rectangular box in which is contained the bufier or polisher F, said polisher being composed of any material which will be suitable for polishing the nails. It will be observed that the width of the member 13 is less than that of the member A, and that the member B fits into the member A, the two parts thus forming a box to protect the polisher, and pre vent it from being injured by the collection thereon of grit or other substances which 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

may be in the pocket where the implement is carried.
It will. be seen that for convenience in use and in carrying the device I pivotally unite the two members A and B at one end, through the medium of the pin G, which passes through the flanges C and D, while the other end of the member A has the re duced portion H, with the flanges G extending along the sides thereof. The member B is extended at K beyond its flanges, this portion being pointed and beveled to form a suitable nail cleaning instrument, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 2.
Secured to the reduced portion H of the device, through the medium of the rivet L, is my improved nail trimming, scraping and filing device M, shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4c. Said device is of substantially tubular shape, and has its outer surface ridged or serrated to form a file, while its edges are beveled or sharpened to form a cutting edge N. If desired, in place of having both edges beveled I may have one edge plane; but, in either case, I provide in one of the edges a notch or recess 0, said recess having its sides formed into a sharp cutting edge of substantially V-shape, to cut the nails. In cutting a nail, the nail is inserted in the recess and the tool moved around the edge of the nail, like a knife or draw shave.
It will be understood that the member M may be made of any suitable material, and formed in any desired shape, or cut by means of dies or otherwise; it being shown in Figs. 3 and 4 as formed from a fiat blank, while in Fig. 5 it is shown formed in one piece from a solid piece of metal. To aid in securing the device I have formed the opening or openings 1? in the attaching portions M, as it is shown in Figs. 3 and 4; or the solid attaching portion M, as it is shown in Fig. 5: and it will be understood that while I have illustrated it as attached to the end of the specially constructed handle portion it may be secured to any form of handle, to a pencil or other article, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or in any way impairing the efiiciency of the device.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a manicure implement, the combination with a pair of pivoted members each having its edges bent to form a pocket thereon, of a buffer contained in one of said pockets, a nail cleaning extension on one of the members, and an extension on the other member for filing and cutting the nails, said latter extension projecting above the plane of the pivoted members and surrounding and protecting the nail cleaning extension When the members are folded together.
2. In a manicure implement, the combination With a pair of pivoted members each having its edges bent to form a pocket thereon, of a buffer contained in one of said pockets, a nail cleaning extension on one of the members, and an extension comprising a tubular band having its edges beveled and its ends secured to the end of the other pivoted member, said band having sharpened and serrated portions for cutting and filing the nails, and the edge of the band projecting above and receiving and protecting the point of the cleaner When in closed position.
3. The combination with a handle portion, of a tubular member secured thereto,
one edge of said member being sharpened to form a cuticle cutter and the other edge having a nail cutting recess formed therein.
4. The combination with a handle portion, of a tubular member secured thereto, one edge of said member being sharpened to form a cuticle cutter and the other edge having a recess formed therein with sharpened edges for cutting the nails, the outer surface of said member being serrated to provide a nail file.
5. A manicure implement, comprising a handle and a blade secured thereto, said blade being bent into substantially tubular form and having one edge sharpened to provide a cutting edge, a notch having sharpened edges formed in the other edge of the blade, and serrations formed on the outer face of the blade to provide a file.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT A. OOWING. itnesses E. C. COOPER, G. W. NEWMAN.
