Sept. 20, 1949. L. P. HEIMAN PENCIL SHARPENER Filed Sept. 14, 1945 0 3 W 1 1 Z w f 3 w M 0 w a 3 l a4. .w 4 m .j f .j Z M Patented Sept. 20, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PENCIL SHARPENER Louis P. Heiman, near Minneapolis, Minn.
Application September 14, 1945, Serial No. 616,199
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a pencil sharpener.
Mechanical pencil sharpeners have heretofore been used but said pencil sharpeners are objectionable in Operation in certain ways, particularly the sharpeners using a rotating cutting member. With most of the pencil sharpeners of the prior art it has not been possible to secure a real sharp point on the pencil.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple and'efficient pencil sharpener by means of which a pencil can be nicely sharpened with a very fine point.
It is a further Object of the invention to provide a simple and eificient structure of pencil sharpener comprising means for holding a pencil and a knife blade disposed in a plane at an acute angle to the longitudinal central axis of the pencil, together with means or effecting a draw cut of said knife blade.
It is more specifically an object of the invention to provide a pencil sharpener having a member with a tapered recess therein adapted to receive a pencil, a knife blade disposed in a plane making an acute angle with the longitudinal central axis of said pencil and disposed at one side of said member and recess together with a rotatable means for giving said knife blade a movement longitudinally of and transversely of said pencil to sharpen the same.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation as seen from the right of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view; and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, a pencil sharpening device is shown comprising a frame having a supporting member ln. While this member might be variously formed, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is shown as a flat plate having its lower portion loa offset from its main portion, said ofiset portion being connected to the main portion by a downwardly or angularly extending portion I Ob. Plate lO in its upper portion is provided with a circular opening Inc. A bar ll extends transversely of plate ln at its upper portion, said bar being spaced some distance from plate IO and secured thereto by headed screws |2 which extend through plate ln and through spacing blocks 13, said screws being threaded into bar ll. A gear 1 4 is provided and while this might be variously formed, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is shown as a Spur gear, the same being journaled on a headed stud 15 secured in bar H. A handle is secured to gear M, the same projecting through opening lc and being secured to gear |4 by a headed screw 18 which extends through gear 14 and is threaded into handle ll. Gear |4 meshes with a pinion 20 journaled on a stud 2l secured in plate ID, and pinion 20 has a crank pin 22 projecting rom one side thereof. A pitman 23 has an aperture at one end through which Crank pin 22 extends so that the same is pivoted on said Crank pin. Crank pin 22 is headed and extends through the aperture in member 23, as stated, and is threaded into gear 20. The other end of pitman 23 is pivotally connected by a pivot stud 24 to the lower end of a bar 25, which in turn is pivotally connected by the pivot stud 26 to bar ll. The bar or pitman 23 forms a. blade or knife-carrying member and has secured thereto in any suitable manner a knife blade 28. A member or block 29 is provided secured by spaced headed screws 38 to the lower portion loa of plate lll. Member 29 has a tapered recess 29a therein, as shown in Fig. 4, said recess being Open somewhat at the outer side of block 29. Blade 28 is disposed along One side of block 29, as shown in Fig. 4, and it will be seen that said blade 28 is at an acute angle to the longitudinal central axis of the tapered recess 29a and of a pencil P disposed therein. As illustrated, recess 29a has a small transverse dimension at its smaller end at one end of block 29. A resilient plate or spring 32 is secured by a headed screw 33 to One side of block 29 and bears at its upper end against one side of blade 28, the same acting to hold said blade against member 29 and pencil P.
In operation the pencil P will be placed in the recess 29a. It Will thus engage the rear side of said recess and will also engage the inner side of blade 28. The operator now rotates gear M by means of the handle in a counter-clockwise direction, as seen in Fig. 1 and this in turn rotates pinion 20 and Crank pin 22. Member 23 is Oscillated by Crank pin 22, said member 23 swinging at one end with the lower end of bar 25, which swings about pivot 26. Member 23 and knife blade 28 are thus given a movement longitudinally of pencil P and transversely thereof. Knife 28 thus moves along pencil P and transversely thereof. Knife 28 thus moves along pencil P and effects a draw cut thereon The pencil P will be intermittentiy rotated and pushed Or advanced in recess 29a until a Very fine point is formed thereon, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The blade 28 will of course be quite sharp and the wood of the pencil is nicely and progressively shaved off so that the sharpened end of' the pencil gives a neat and pleasing appearance. A smoother cut can more consistently be made than with a rotating tool Which at times must rotate against the grain of the Wood. i
From "the above description it Will be seen that I have provided a pencil sharpener of quite simple construction and yet One Which is Very efiicien't.
The sharpening operation can' be very raipidly.
performed and a Very fine point can be produced On the pencil lead. The plate 'l'o can readil' be provided with attaching means s'o that :it 'can be' attached to a Wall, desk or other desirable Object.
The device has been amply demonstrated in actu'al practice and found' to "be very successful and erfieient. r
Applicant's device -is *so constructed that a used raZor -b1ade can-very conveniently be usedioi the blade 23. "Such razor blades when 'not 'desir abl Sharp 'for shaving are still very emcient 'a's pencil s'harp'eni'ng blett-les. The blades in applicant's device can therefore 'be provided 'at prac- 'aaa-n no expense. Such razor -bl a'des are thin and function very eifec'tively in applicarit'sdevica of -coursabe understood that various changes "may be made 'in 'the form, details,
arrangement and proportions 'of the parts, without iep'artingfrom the Scope of appiica'nt s inven aaa Which 'generally stated, 'consists 'in a device' capable'of Carrying out the objects above set forth, "in the parts and com-binations of 'parts disclosed and defined in 'the appended 'claims 1.
