This invention relates yto means for straightening hair.
One of the features of the invention resides in a means wherebynatural curly ork kinky hair may be straightened to enable dressing of the same in modern styles and is especially adapted for use in straightening the hair of the feminine sex.
It is well known that when straight hair is wound upon a hair winding' stick and subj ected to heat while in such wound condition will cause the same to become curly and which system is commonV inthe art'of permanent waving. t is my purpose to utilize this system to straighten curly hair by tightly winding the curly hair lengthwise of a stick to secure the same in straight lengths and then subjecting the hair so held to the action of heat.
Another feature is the provision of a hair winding stick having sets of hooks on opposite sides thereof, the set on one side being staggered with respect tothe set on the opposite side to enable the compact looping of a hank of curly hair thereon. f
A further objectof the invention is the provision of a hair straightening device which is simple of construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and which may be used in association with the conventional forms of permanent hair waving machines. Y
Other objects of the invention will appear as the following specification'is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention in use.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of my improved hair straighteningV stick with a hank of hair shown wound thereon.
Figure 3 is an edge elevational view cf the same. l
Figure 4c is a perspective view of the hair straightening device per se.
. Figure 5 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view on the line 5--5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates my hair straightening device in its entirety which includes a flat elongated body 11 of aluminum Y ing .thefarrangement ofthe hair thereon.
lstr-aight whenunwoundfrom the member. A160 or other lightl metal and which isformed with a finger grip portiorior handle 12 at one end, the said end being rounded. The opposite `end ofA the bodyterminates in a small head having a* bifurcation or slot 14 formedtherein,l whilefinwardly ofthe slot Iis 'a groove 15;- l l; i
vriheVoppositesides ofthe flat body 11 are formed-@with sets of spaced hooks ornotches n 16; the hooks of one set being staggered with 'f respectl to the hooks of the other set.l All of the hooks extendoutwardly toward the ends of thebody adjacent thereto. In -practice,.,assume tha-tit is desired to straighten or Vremove thel kink from a head ffl I.
VVof human hair.
lThe hair yis arranged in banks, and each' hank iswound upon one of the straightening Vmembers .10. rThe head end '13 of the member vis positioned approximately one inch from 7 thescalpand the 'hank of--hair A is secured o thereto by a tie string 17, the winding of the Astring being seated in the groove 15. If desired-the ends ofthe tie stringniay be slipped intogthe bifurcations or slot 1li to avoidtying 7 of knots. With the member 10 attached to the hank of hairthel said hank is wound lengthwise of the bod'yf11 over and around the hooks 16'A as best seen inFigure 2 ofthe drawing. When fully l.wound, the end of ,the
. vhank'inay be secured by inserting the Vsame vunder one of the lengths as shown, ora string .'(notz-shown) may betied about Athe wound 'hair centrally of the body 11. During the arranging of thehair in this manner,` the operatorV gra'ps the straightening memberl 10 by the handle' 12.*QAll parts are, rounded to prevent .injury tothe head of the person being `treated and to protect'the operatordur- After the hank of hair A. has been thus arranged, the member 10 with the hair thereon is placed in `theheating element B of'a permanenthair'waving machine. These heating elements areheatedeither -by steam or electricity, the purpose being to subject the straightened hair heldon the member 10 `to such heat as to cause the same to remain Heat is nowy employed y.to place ya wave or curl in naturally straight hair when curled Cal upon a stick andit is my idea to remove a vcurl or kink from naturally curly or kinky `hair by a similar process.
, From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a device by Which curly lhair may be held in straightslengthsand subjected'to the` action of @heat to render Vthe said hair straight when removed from the device, and which is capable of use in connection WithVV the present construction of permanent hair Waving machines.
While I have shown and described What IV Y deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, I Wish it to be understood that such changes as come within the scope ofthe appended claims may be resorted to if desired. v ,Y ,Y
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new and desire t'o'secure by Letters Patentis:.- t v w l. A hair straightening device comprising a Aflat elongated body, and sets ofl spaced notches formed in opposite sides of saidbody and the notches of each set facing opposite ends thereof. Y J Y 2. A hair straightening device comprising a at elongated body, sets of spaced hooks formed in opposite sides of said body, the sets of hooks on one side being staggered With respect to the hooks on the opposite side, the
respective hooks of each set extending out- Wardly toward the adjacent end of said body. 3. A hair straightening device comprising a fiat elongated body, sets of spaced hooks formed in opposite sides of said body, the set of hooks on one side being staggered with respect to the hooks on the opposite side, the
respective hooks of each set extending outwardly toward the adjacent end of said body, and a handle extending fromr one en d k.or said 4. .A hair straightening device comprising a flatV elongated body, sets of. spaced hooks formed in opposite sides of said body, the Vset Y of' hooks on one side being staggered with respect to the hooks on the opposite side, the
respective hooks of each set extending out- Wardly toward theadj acent end of said body,
vand a handle extending from one end of said body, and means on the opposite end of said body by which the same may be attached to a hank of hair to bestraiglitened.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.v
