UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EPHRAIM SEARS, OF KIMBOLTON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND DAVID DULL, OF WHEELING, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHABLE SHELVES.
{Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,965, dated March 27, 1877 application filed September 23, 1876.
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRALM SEARS, of Kimboltou, in the county of Guernsey, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable and Detachable Shelves for Stoves, Desks, Tables, 850.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a detachable shelf for stoves and other articles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a cookingstove, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical section of the same.
A represents a shelf, of any suitable dimensions, provided on its under side with two arms, B B, running transversely across the same. The inner end of each arm B is curved, as shown, in nearly semicircular form, the extreme end of such circle or book 0 being a suitable distance beyond the inner edge of the shelf.
To each hook O, at or near its junction with the arm B, is pivoted a hook, D, the upper end of which works in a slot in the shelf, and extends beyond the inner edge thereof. From the lower end of the hook D extends an arm, E, downward, and through the lower end thereof is passed an adjusting screw, G, at right angles to the same.
It will be seen that each hook D, at each end of the table, is independently pivoted to each hook G, and works through the slot in the table; hence, the shelf can be adjusted and applied to unlevel or unequal surfaces, as well as to horizontal and even surfaces.
To apply this shelf to a stove, the ends of the hooks G (J are brought under the edge of the stove-plate in the groove usually found therein, and the hooks D D are placed on top of the stove-plate, when the screws G are adjusted to bear against the side of the stove.
The shelf is by these means held to the stove, and the more weight is placed on the shelf the tighter it is held. By means of the screws G G the shelf is also regulated as desired.
On the under side of the shelf is arranged a drawer, H, as shown.
This shelf may be used in many places; for instance, in stores, to be fastened to the counter, and used as a desk. It may be fastened to the limb of a tree, and, in fact, almost any place.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the slotted shelf A, having the drawer H secured to its under part, the stationary arms B B, having hooks O O at their ends, with the straight arms E E, having hooks D D, and independently pivoted to the arms B B, and the adjustingscrews G G, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of July, 1876.
EPHRAIM SEARS.
