FRED W'M. HUNT, OF KEY WEST, FLORIDA.
SWING-SHELF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed March 9. 1907. Serial No. 361,452.
-maehine, books or other articles, and more especially designed for use on an office desk or a similar piece of furniture, the arrangement being such that theuser seated at the desk can readily move the shelf into convenient position for making use of the typewriting machine, book or the like, and for swinging the shelf to one side of the desk, to leave the front thereof wholly unobstructed.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement in position at one side of the desk; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same, part being shown in section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the improvement, and Fig. 5 is an under side view of the shelf shown in Fig. 4.
The shelf A, of a size for conveniently supporting a typewriting machine, book or the like, is provided at its under side and at one corner thereof with a depending pivot B engaging a bearing 0 formed in a table C of the desk or like piece of furniture on which the improvement is to be used, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. The bearing C is preferably located at the front right-hand corner of the desk table 0, to permit of conveniently swinging the shelf A either to one side of the desk, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or to the front of the desk, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
From the underside of the shelf A extends downwardly a brace D, preferably in the form of a plurality of rods, secured at their upper ends to the under side of the shelf A and terminating at their lower ends in a pivot D in axial alinement with the pivot B and engaging a bearing E screwed or otherwise secured to the desk, in vertical alinement with the bearing C. A collar D is arranged on the pivot D and rests on top of the bearing E, so that a firm support is given to the shelf A, at the same time the brace D is .free to turn in its bearing E.
In order to hold the shelf A in position when swung to the front of the desk, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, a fastening device is provided, preferably in the form of a spring arm F, attached to the underside of the shelf A and projecting at the front thereof, so that when the shelf A is swung into active position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, then the spring arm F engages the desk table 0, thus holding the shelf A in place for the time being.
If desired the holding or locking devicemay be in the form of clutch disks G, G, of which the disk G is secured to the under side of the shelf A at the pivot B, and the disk G is secured to the desk table 0 concentric to the bearing C, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 4 and 5.
By the arrangement just described, the shelf A can be readily held locked in any desired position at the front or side of the desk as the case may be. Now by the arrangement described a typewriting machine, ledger or other book or article can be readily supported on the shelf A without forming an obstruction to the user of the desk, at the same timeallowing the user seated in front of the desk to conveniently swing the shelf A and the article supported thereon into operating position, for the use of the typewriting ma chine, book or the like by the party seated at the desk.
The device is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured and readily applied to desks and like pieces of furniture as now constructed and used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination with a desk or the like having an opening, forming a bearing, in a projecting portion of its table at one corner thereof and provided with a bearing projecting from the desk below the opening and an axial alinement therewith, of a shelf having at one corner and projecting from its under side a pivot engaging the opening in the desk table, a brace formed of a plurality of rods united at their lower ends and provided at said united ends with a collar and below the collar with a pivot, engaging the lower hearing, the upper ends of the rods being secured to the shelf, and a locking device for the shelf comprising serrated disks, one secured to the under side of the shelf at the pivot and the other to the desk table concentric with the opening thereof.
2. The combination with a desk or the like having an opening forming a bearing, in a projecting portion of its table at one corner thereof, and provided with a bearing projecting from the desk below the opening and in alinement therewith, of a shelf having at one corner and projecting from its under side a pivot engaging the opening in the desk table, a brace formed of a plurality of rods united at their lower ends and provided at said united ends with a collar and below the collar with a pivot engaging the lower bearing, the upper ends of the rods being secured to the shelf, and means for locking the shelf in position.
3. The combination with a desk or the like provided with vertically alined bearings at one corner thereof, of a shelf having at one corner on its under side a pivot engaging the upper bearing, a brace formed of a plurality of rods united at their lower ends and provided at said united end with a pivot engaging the lower bearing, the rods diverging and having their upper ends secured to the shelf, and a locking device for the shelf comprising serrated disks, one secured to the underside of the shelf at thelpivot and the other to the desk table concentric with the upper bearing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRED lVM. HUNT.
