IMPRQVEMENT Ihl SPICE-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,709, dated March 20, 1877; application filed February 12, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM J. WHITE, of Boston, in the county of Sufl'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Salt-Distributors or Gruets, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to provide a salt-distributer, with a cheap, simple, and

efiicient pulverizer of the salt contained within the cruet or bottle, and which shall act more effectually when in use than those heretofore constructed; and it consists of a pendent rod connected to the interior of the perforated cap, and having several series of points radiating from the same in such manner that the act of screwing and unscrewing the said cap, having such pulverizer, shall give it a rotary motion within the salt, and likewise raise it vertically by the action of the screw-thread within the cap upon the corresponding screw-thread upon the neck of the cruet or bottle, thus thoroughly pulverizing the salt within the same, which is liable to become caked and hard.

A represents a glass cruet or bottle, and having a screw-thread upon its neck, as usual. Upon this neck is fitted a perforated metal cap, B, as heretofore. To the interior of this metal cap B I attach the pulverizer-rod O by means of a screw-thread, or any other desired 'manner.. This pulverizer-rod O has several series of points, E, radiating from the same at intervals, as shown.

It will be seen that the pulverizer hangs pendent from the center of the cap, which, if turned as in the act of removing the same from the bottle, the points E of the pulverizer must stir the salt within the bottle by their rotary motion as they are raised vertically at the same time by the action of the screwthread. When the pulverizer is in place the cruet or bottle may be shaken to cause the salt to be pulverized by being driven against the pulverizer, as heretofore practiced with those now in use.

I am aware that pulverizers have been attached to the interior of the bottle at the bot tom, but were not susceptible of being moved; also, that various detached pulverizers have been placed within the bottles, all of which are more or less defective for the purposes contemplated. I am aware also that pulverizers have been constructed to slide through the perforated top of a pepper-box, as in Letters Patent granted Bernard Morahan, November 28, 1871; I therefore broadly disclaim such.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The salt-pulverizer, consisting of the perforated cap B, provided with a screw-thread, and having a stationary rod, O, rigidly connected thereto, and provided with several series of radial points, E, in such manner that the unscrewing of such cap from the neck of a bottle shall producea spiral rotary motion of the points E through the contents of such bottle, as they rise vertically out of the same by the action of the screw-thread, all being constructed, combined, and arranged to opcrate substantially in the manner described, as and for the purposes set forth.
