Description

J. G. GILPIN.
FENCE.
No.'187,124. Patented Fe b.6, 1877.
{@Untmmmm y TIM N, PETERS, PHOXO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C.
- UNITED STATEs PATENT CFFICFQ,
JOHN G. GILPIN, OF EAGLETOWN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT m FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,124, dated February 6, 1877; application filed November 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN G. GILPIN, of Eagletown, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; anddo herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation. Figs. 2 and 3 are details, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the post.
Each panel of my fence is composed of a series of horizontal boards, A, connected by upright battens or cleats B, fastened to them in such a manner that the boards will project a suitable distance at each end. The fencepost consists of a sill, 0, having in the center a notch, a, of such width as to receive the two bottom boards of two adjoining panels. On each side of the sill O is secured a triangular piece, D, the inner edge of which stands at right angles with the sill and flush with the notch and the upper ends of said pieces D are connected by a bar, E, as shown. To the inner side of one of the pieces D is pivoted a latch, Gr. One of the boards A of each panel has near each end, in the upper edge, a notch, 71. The ends of two adjoining panels are inserted from opposite sides between the two triangular pieces D D, the bottom boards resting in the notch a of the sill O, and the top boards on the cross-bar E, and the latch G is then turned down into the notches b I), thus locking the two panels in the post.
At the corners of the fence the post is dispensed with, and one panel is provided with two notched slides, H H, placed between the boards, and the end of this panel placed between two cleats or battens, B, at the end of the adjoining panel at the corner. This latter panel is provided with two wedge-shaped sliding pins, I. The slides H are run out between the boards of the adjoining panel, and the pins then run out to enter the notches in the slides, and thus unite the two panels together. The slides and pins are, at their inner ends, provided with pivoted buttons, as shown, so that they can be easily removed and placed in any panel where needed.
The panels may be made of rails just as well as of boards.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The fence-post consisting of the notched sill 0, triangular pieces D D, and bar E, provided with the latch G, in combination with the panels A B, having notches, as described, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In a fence, the panels A B, in combination with the sill 0, bar E, the notched slides H, and the sliding pins I, arranged to form a corner in a fence, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two'witnesses.
JOHN G. GILIIN.
