Description

E. HALLETT Fence.
No. 199,542. Patented Jan, 29,1878.
panel, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOOH HALLETT, OF HILLSDALE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 199,642, dated January 29, 1878 application filed October 24, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOCH HALLETT, of the town and county of Hillsdale, and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification a The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable farm-fences, by means of which each length or panel is securely locked to its fellow, at both top and bottom, by a pivoted bar provided with an interlocking notch at each end, and so arranged as not only to lock the panels together, but to form a cross-bar brace to each Figure l is a perspective view of a section of my improved fence, showing how the panels are locked together when set up; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a single detached panel.
Like letters indicate like parts in eachfigure.
In the drawings, A A A A represent the vertical stiles, to which are fastened the top and bottom rails B. Other horizontal rails, 0, one or more, as maybe desired, are secured at one end to the vertical stile A and their opposite ends to a short vertical stile, D, thus forming a narro W projecting panel beyond the stile A To the center rail, and through it and the vertical stile A is pivoted the double latch-bar E, provided near each endwith locking-notches F.
It will be noticed that in Fig. 1, when a section of fence is set up, the latch-bar engages with the top rail of the center panel, which project's through the'space between the stiles A and A, and also with the lower rail at the opposite end, and when thus set up the lock-bar also forms a diagonal brace across the face of the whole pane This fence maybe built upon uneven ground,
and the panels are easily unlocked, and as readily removed and set up on another ground, as may be desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a portable farm-fence, made in sections, the double latch-bar and brace E, pivoted to the central stile of each section, and having notched ends adapted to lock the section to which it is attached with the two adjoining sections, substantially as described and shown.
2. A portable fence the sections of which are composed of vertical stiles and horizontal rails, the central rails 0 being attached so as to project from one end of the section, in combination with the double latch-bar and brace E, substantially as described and shown.
ENOOH HALLETT.
