Description

UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGH B. OOYLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 87,103., dated February 6, 1877 application filed June 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUG-H B. OoYLE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a bedstead with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a detail section of one of the end rails. Fig. 3 is a plan of the bedstead folded for transportation purposes.
My improvements have reference to the bedstead for which Letters Patent of the United States, dated May 28, 1872, No. 127,312, were granted and issued to me. ments have for their object to provide a bedstead composed of iron piping and couplings, as in said patent set forth, combined with wooden slats for the support of the mattress.
My present improvements therefore consist, essentially, in the combination of a bedstead-frame, having the legs or posts, side and end rails, composed of iron piping, with wooden slats held by pins inserted in and projecting from the end rails, and the peculiar construction and arrangement of the two outside slats, whereby said combination is rendered practical and effective.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A A designate the posts, B B the end, and O G the side, rails, said several parts being held in the relative positions shown by T- couplings D D. E E are wooden slats extending between the end rails and resting thereupon, pins or studs b b in said rails passing through suitable openings in said slats. In order to prevent a wabbling motion or action similar to that of lazy-tongs in the frame, the two outside slats E E are cut away, as shown at e e, and arranged so that the posts A A .shall pass through the notches thus formed.
The slats are thus made to partially embrace said posts, rendering the bed, when erected, very rigid and secure.
Said improve-- by withdrawing said posts-from the couplings, and the parts compactly united by laying the piping on the head-board F and buck--' ling the strapsff around them.
The subject of this application is different and distinguishable from that of application filed by me April 7, 1876, and patented July 25, 1876, the corner-clamps embraced in the latter being dispensed with, and the bed braced and strengthened by means of side rails of piping. To prevent misconstructiou as to the scope of the present claim,I disclaim the features common to both bedsviz., the end rails and posts made of piping, the pins to hold the slats, and the slats, having the two outermost cut away at the corners to embrace the posts--lim1ting myself to a bed corresponding to the specific terms of the following claim.
What I claim as my invention is As a new article of manufacture, the improved folding cot or bedstead, consisting, essentially, of the frame made of piping, and composed of the posts A, side rails O, and end rails B, connected by sliding T-coupling D and the slats E E E, the two outer slats being cut away at e e for the passage of the posts, said end rails B being provided with pins b to receive and hold the suitably-perforated slats, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of June, 1876.
HUGH B. OOYLE.
