Description
June 14, 1932. J. M. LILLIGREN COMBINED SHIFT LEVER KNOB AND CONTAINER Filed Nov. l, 1927 Patented June 14, 1932 UNITED g STATES JONATHAN M. LILLIGREN, OF ENID, OKLAHOMA COMBINED SHIFT LEVER KNOB AND CONTAINER Application led November 1, 1927. Serial No. 230,361.
The present invention is directed to improvements in combined shift lever knobs and containers. Y
The primary object of the invention is to L provide a device ofthis character so constructed that it can be attached to the shift lever of an automobile transmission to take the place of the conventional solid form of knob, the construction being such that matches or l@ any other article can be placed in the knob and conveniently'in reach of the driver.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this'character, which when in place, will have the appearance of the con- 5 ventional form of knob, access to the inte rior thereof being readily had through an opening normally closed by a cover.
With these and -other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Figure 2 is a vertical central sectional view. Figure 3 is a similar View taken at right angles to Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, l designates a section of a shift lever and Qthe knob which has an interiorly threaded ferrule 8 depending therefrom for detachable threaded engagement with the shift lever. This knob is of casing-like form and includes a bottom 4 from which the ferrule depends. The wall 5 of the knob has formed therein an opening 6 through which various articles may be passed and removed.
The upper' surface of the bottom 4 is provided with a continuous wall 6 which provides a socket 7 constituting a holder for a box of safety matches or loosematches, as
desired.
The opening 6 is normally closed by a cover 8 which has its lower end hinged to the lower end of the opening 6 of the knob, as at 9, and
its other end provided with a resilient latch 10 for engagement with the knob, said latch serving to maintain the cover 8 in its closed and is so shaped that it can be conveniently` gripped by the driver. 'Ihe holder 7 is-preferably rectangular in shape and cast or otherwise formed integral with the body of the' knob While the side walls of the holder are spaced from the inner wall of the knob to form side pockets or auxiliary holders for the reception of small articles such as pins, coins, and the like. 7 is so positioned within the knob that one end thereof is in alinementwith the pivoted lid or cover so that when said cover is swung downwardly to open position, ready access may be had to both the matches and small articles within the side pockets. y
While the device is primarily designed for containing matches it will be of course understood that articles such as compacts or the like may be placed therein.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a knob has been provided which in appearance represents a conventional form of knob.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: i
A knob for shift levers comprising a hoilow body portion having one end thereof reduced to form a ferrule, the interior walls of It will be noted that the holder which are threaded for engagement with a tion and disposed in alinement with one end of the article holder to permit ready access toV both the article holder and said side pockets. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
