Description
, Ma 10, 1932. c. SCHAER CYLINDER HEAD FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed Sept. 2 8, 1931 Patented May 10, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SCHAER, 0F LANGENTHAL, SWITZERLAND, ASSIGNOR THE FIRM O1 SULZER SOCIETE ANONY ME, OF WINTERTHUR, SWITZERLAND I CYLINDER HEAD FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES I Application filed September 28, 1931, Serial No. 565,542, and in Switzerland October 23, 1930.
This invention relates to liquid-cooled cylinder heads for internal combustion engines of the kind having a pre-ignition chamber inserted therein.
A cylinder head according to the present invention is furnished with a pre-ignition chamber inserted therein so that a part of the chamber bears on and makes a fluid-tight joint with the inner wall of the cooling-liquid chamber, and a thrust member is provided which engages the wall of the pre-ignition chamber towards the inner end thereof so that this chamber is free to expand longitudinally in the outward direction.
One construction of cylinder head according to the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in sec-' tion on the line I-I of Figure 2, and
Figure 2 is a sectional plan on the line IIII of Figure 1. y
In the construction illustrated an inner wall a and outer wall 1) form between them a cooling chamber 0 through whichcooling liquid can be circulated and a pie-ignition chamber d is formed within a casing e, the
inner end of which bears on and makes a fluid-tight joint with the wall a. The fuel, which is burnt in the combustion chamber indicated at f, is controlled by a needle valve g cooperating with a nozzle h, the fuel being partly burnt in the pre-ignit-ion chamber d so that the resulting expansion which takes place within this chamber injects fuel through openings 5 into the combustion chamber Iii accordance with the present invention a thrust member m is provided which makes a tight joint between the chamber casing e and the outer wall I; of the cylinder head, the inner end 12 of the thrust member engaging the casing 6 towards its inner end as shown.
Thus when nuts Z are tightenedon retaining bolts the inner end of the chamber casing is held in position against the wall a of the cooling chamber but is free to expand longitudinally in the outward direction.
.That part of the thrust member m lying within the cooling chamber a is furnished with openings 0 sd that the cooling liquid has access to the wall 6 of the pre-ignition chamher (i.
I claim:
1. In a liquid-cooled cylinder head for internal combustion engines the combination with a pre-ignition chamber adapted to be inserted into the cylinder head so that a part of the chamber bears on and makes a fluidtight oint with the inner wall of the coolingliquid chamber, of a thrust member engaging the wall of the pre-ignition chamber towards the inner end thereof so that this chamber is. free to expand longitudinally in the outward direction. 2. A liquid-cooled cylinder head and pre- 1gn1t1on chamber for internal combustion engines constructed and arranged as claimed ignition chamber.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
- CHARLES SCHAER.
