TNERAPNIC CILNN WTNESSES W4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEn ISAAC FOOTE, OF ST. CHARLES, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN NUTMEG-GRATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 185,675, dated December 26, 1876; application filed June 3, 1876.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo FooTE, of'St. Charles, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Nutmeg-Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of' the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is an end view, of my nutmeg-grater.
The nature of this invention consists in the construction of a nutmeg-grater, provided at the top With a hole sufficiently largeto allow the passage of a nutmeg into a nutmegholder Without separating said holder and grater; also, in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A designates a grating-plate, provided with a dat grating-surface,a,and side flanges a a', which set np slightly from said grating-surface. Rigidly attached to the rear of said gratingplate is a trough or channel, A, of ordinary construction, with which the perforations in grating-surface a communicate. Its bottom is open to discharge the grated nutmeg, which passes through said perforations. The upper extremity of plate A extends above trough A1, and it is provided with a perforation, A2, sufficiently large to allow the passage of a nutmeg. Said perforation also serves as a means of hanging up the nutmeg-gratter. B designates a holder, which consists of a cylindrical casing, B1, and flat plate B2, which slides longitudinally over the grating-plate A. Cylindrical casing B1 is provided on the outer end with a head, c, which is perforated in the middle to allow the movement of rod d, the inner end of which rod bears a follower, 6 preferably constructed of wood, that fills the inside circumference of said cylinder. Between head c and follower e I locate a spring,
f, which operates to force follower e toward the grating-surface, and thereby to bring the nutmeg into position to be grated. Flat plate B2 is provided with side guide-flanges g g, which embrace flanges a a on the side of grating-plate A, and thereby confine the holder B to said plate Ain such manner as to allow onlylongitudinal motion over said gratingplate.
lt is not necessary to separate holder B from grating-plate A to insert the nutmeg preparatory to grating.
The holder B may be slid longitudinally upward till the end of the follower e is opposite hole A2. Follower e is then retracted by pulling on the outer end of rod d, and the nutmeg is passed through hole A2 into the recess in cylinder Bl, lef't by so retracting said follower. It is then ready for grating.
I am aware that it is not new to use a grating-plate in connection with a nutmegholder provided with a spring to act upon the follower, and I therefore lay no broad claim to such invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a nutmeg-grating plate, provided with a hole adapted to allow the passage of a nutmeg, with a cylindrical holder provided with a spring-acted follower, whereby the nutmeg maybe inserted into a side holder through said grating-plate without separating the parts of the device, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of grating-plate A, provided with trough A1, flanges a a/, gratingsurface a, and perforation A2, with holder B, consisting of' cylindrical casing B1, flat plate B2, side guide-anges g g, rod d, follower c, and springf, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC FOOTE.
